I would think the 5 cylinder Atlas would be better than the 4.3...

I have the 4.3 in my 2001 S-10 Xtreme 98000mi, it runs like a top
you would prob need a late model one so the PCM could be flashed.
A truck one mite work with a modded wire harness, 4L60E and PCM.

 

4.3 is a heavy slug of a motor........ why not drop in a 4.8 LS based motor and get some real power and torque

 

The only 4.8s that I can find are high mileage and need rebuilding. The 4.3 LV3 puts out a respectable 285hp. Am I correct in assuming that any 4.3 with an aluminum block would be a LV3?

 

Or the atlas I6

 

Would the I6 fit? I thought it might be too long?

 

I don't think 5th gen engines will work in our trucks. You'll need a Gen III or IV.

I also found multiple 4.8L's locally with 120-130K kms on them, no rebuild necessary.

I'm in Edmonton. The ones I found are out of 03 and 04 half tons, located at Central Auto and Truck Parts. I use car-part.com to search wreckers for parts.

For whatever reason, 1999-04 and 05-MY07 are listed differently but I don't think there are any differences from 99-07. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

 

Give Helen at All west parts a call in Edmonton. She sold me a 6.0 and it was better than I had hoped. Agreed also www.car_parts.com is super helpful

I have dealt with All West parts before and didn't have any complaints.

 

I6/4.2 is too long for the 355, unless you want to move your radiator to the bed of the truck

 

I thought the 4.2 might be too good to be true. It looks like I'm back to the 4.8 or the 3.7. Do most valve probs on the Atlas show up on only low mileage motors? I can get a 2007 3.7 with 180,000 km on the meter. Is there any way to do a rough check on the valves on a junkyard
non-running motor without opening it?

 

The trucks that had those problems were on certain 3.5L's from 04-06, you'd have to check the VIN on them to see if they were one of the truck with the issue.

 

Someone here mentioned that the 3.7 also had valve problems but maybe it wasn't as big of a problem as some 2.8s and 3.5s
I've started looking at 4.8s. Are all gen III and gen IV good candidates for a swap?

 

Yes they are, they have little differences between generations but they are definitely worth it.
