I need to replace the seal around my fuel sending unit. That rubber seal around top of the sending unit. Ive looked for a how-to on removing the gas tank. Im sure it will be aggregating. Are there any tips you guys can give me Romans my job easier. The gastank is nearly empty. Any help will be appreciated.

Disconnect filler neck and vent. Put jack under tank then release the straps slowly incase it decides to drop all of a sudden.lower it enough to disconnect fuel lines and wires to pump. might as well replace the pump instead seeing as the tank is coming down so you don't have to do it anytime soon.

I heard that. Having the tools and the aptitude isn't the problem. I just hope when I get the gas tank down; I hope ti see that seal has failed. Because I have a evaporation large leak code and I have already checked and replace other stuff. And now when I fill my gas tank all the way up I can smell the gas very very good. It is like it is in a bucket in the back of the truck. As I drive and the tank empty the smell goes away. I will check other things like the filler neck while im down there. I hope this is the problem so I will not have to do this again.

I dropped the tank.. not the bed, easier and faster one guy can do it! I let it run almost empty, removed the filler from the box side, ground strap, and reached up and unplugged the two wiring connectors, to the sender/fuel pump, and pressure sensor, then removed the bolts holding the straps together. I actually bear hugged the tank and slid id onto a piece of card board, I recommend a jack though! RE:RE of the tank, about 1 hr and 45 minutes.

It took me about 1.5 hrs to get the f*cking locking ring off the fuel sender/pump assembley.. surely thee is a special tool for this? Anyone else run into that problem?

Also the Evap leak could be any-ware! Could be from the solenoid on the engine, to the tank, from the tank to the vent valve, from the vapor canister (by the spare tire) Or from the the Gas cap, or the filler neck assembly, or from the pressure sensor seal. Good luck!!

If you do pull the tank replace the pressure sensor and or seal for good measure, it snaps right into the top of the sending unit.

lol took me around 45mins to bust that ring loose. Definitely check the valve on the charcoal canister I just swapped one out on my buddy's canyon.....it only has 30,000 on it and the valve rusted and cracked the plastic. My friend at the dealership told me they warranty and sell alot of those valves because of that problem.

I think 04 is different, I am trying to remember the issue of hand, but I think it didn't have any tabs to hammer on! Just fucked up slots on the top side, that you couldn't get a "purchase" on. I have taken those rings out on other GMs before no problem.. but this was retarded!

I can't remember and can't find pics.. all I know is it was a pain, the screw driver helped slipping off, and stabbed my self with the screw diver holding it on. When I did my dad's 97 chevy it took about 15 min, to remove it and install the new pump and ring.

i got it finished. Turns out that the reason i was smelling gas and the reason the c.e. light was on was because there was an actual hole that was the size of a golfball in the top of the sending unit. you could actually see down intl the tank. also the line to the evap can was rusted in two. My truck was origionally bought and sold in Canada and remained up north for about 5 years. It was due to the salt from the road that would just sit on top of the sending unit. I replaced the sending unit and now all is good. As for taking out the tank and putting it back in. it wasent too herd at all. I dropped the tank in about 30 minute, and after installing the sending unit it took about 30 minutes before i was driving it again!

Thanks for all of the help!
