Front Door Speaker Adapter

When I installed my aftermarket front door speakers I really hated drilling into the inner door panel when there was a perfectly good stock mounting system already in place. To add insult to injury I also ran into an issue with the back of the magnet hitting the window track and causing a gap between the mounting surface and the door panel. At the time I couldn't really do anything about it, but recently I went back into add sound deadening and fix the problem.

I have Autocad Inventor at my school (UNCC) so I made up some mounting brackets (out of PLA) that would utilize the existing stock system. Here is my first prototype.

I added a chamfer for the mounting hardware so the flange would sit flush and added double sided tape to make sure it was sealed properly. The tabs slide down and back to the door panel with the top tap securing it in place. The pics don't show the back of the tabs because I messed them up. I needed to shave quite a bit off of the sides and back for it to sit back onto the door panel.

I've made an updated version that fixed all of the issues I ran into with the first prototype and plan on remaking it in ABS.

I've updated my 3D model after installing so they would slide in easier, but haven't got around to printing new ones.

I did check on them recently since they are made out of PLC. They held up surprisingly well in the North Carolina heat with no visible warping.

I also purchased a 3D printer that prints ABS, but have to fix it first. Once I do that I'll print out a new set.

I'll add another "nice work!".

What is PLA?

I just ran into this a couple of months ago. Went to replace my blown factory speakers, and it boggled my mind that no one made adapters for aftermarket speakers. Thought about going the route that you did, since I utilize AutoCAD for a living, but it would have cost me more than I'd like to have someone print my models for me.

I ended up just going to town on the junk factory speakers and used them as adapters. Worked out pretty well actually.

Now that is clever as hell!

Yeah I was able to print it at my school's library. There are also people who just own a 3D printer that will sell you time and filament to print your project.

Yeah I'd be more than happy to share it with you. I can't post it on the form since it doesn't allow that file format. If you want DM me and I'll send it via email or something.

Come to think of it I'll post it on grab cad at some point too.

Hey! I'm about to be an alumni too in a couple weeks!

macgyver915 For some reason my pm wouldn't let me reply to you
Here is the link for grab cad. There is the original inventor part, STL, and STEP files.

I suggest ABS or something with a higher melting temp. PLA does work but it can warp.

I checked on my brackets today and found a little warpage. No big surprise there. It should still have a proper seal.

I just got my 3D printer back working (It was a piece of plastic stuck in a cooling fan)

I am currently printing out an updated brackets out of ABS. Printing will probably take until tomorrow morning.

I'll post the final product tomorrow or Tuesday some time.

Here is a picture of my 3D printer set up.

The new brackets came out pretty good. My design is spot on for factory replacements. They just slipped in and tightened up.

I'm still working on the kinks with my printer so they didn't come out exactly how I would have liked. They will work just fine for me for what I need though.
