getting power out of a 2.9 waste of time or possible?

basically as the title says I want to focus on getting some power out of my 2.9 in my colorado... if possible. my truck really is a dog and doesnt get out of its own way very easily, lousy MPG's to. So can I get any where with this 2.9? I only have a bored throttle body. What if i did a header, cai, a tune, maybe other bolt ons? Do you guys think it would be worth it? Or should I focus funds and effort to a turbo set up? all input is much appreciated!

Yes it's worth it. 25.5mpg average and can whip any stock Colly/Canyon out there

lol, those MPG's sound great!

All I know is if a man could build a 200+ mph truck out of a 4 cylinder then it can definitely be done lol. Do the bolt ons, that's your best bet then get it tuned
Thats a good point. there really doesnt seem to be many bolt ons available for the 2.9's. atleast from what I can find.

Anything you can do to free up the exhaust system will help. Header, & cat back.

After that if you want power out of the atlas, the cylinder head needs the exhaust ports done. GM purposely restricted the exh port and used the VVT to avoid installing an EGR system.

In stock form the 2.9/3.7 exhaust port flow flat lines at 160cfm @ 0.5" lift (155cfm at 0.35" lift, with the knee in the curve occuring at only 0.15" valve lift with 140 cfm). Once ported the head flows really well (210 cfm at 0.35" valve lift).

The 2.8/3.5 is worse - how much - no one I know of has flowed the early head. But the exhaust port is really small compared to the 2.9/3.7 head.

I know this isn't a bolt on but it is where the powers choked up in the engine. The comp eliminator racers run the 2.9 and make darn close to 500 HP - naturally aspirated. Agreed this isn't an engine that would power a truck very far but it shows the potential.

Yep yep - Opened the exhaust ports up when I did the primary cat delete - lots of excess material there. Enlarged and smoothed to match up with exhaust manifold.

I was able to squeeze ~200HP at the wheels with a 3.7L throttle body, stock air box, stock intake resonator, no cats, and me tuning...and a 5 speed.

Stock I made ~160HP at the wheels...

I gave you a goal...surpass it N/A and impress me.

wow is this a 4 year old post....

I just got my 2.9 worked on. Supermod PTB, Supermod tune, secondary air-injection system delete, primary cat-delete with a highflow muffler dumped before the rear axel.

After having Supermod get his hands on my truck it drives way better. With some spirited driving I am averaging ~20 MPG. That's a big difference from the 13MPG I was getting before.

I also feel the power increase. Nothing drastic like forced induction but it is a great improvement. I now to get figure out how to stop the wheel hop.

If your wanting more than the 200ish HP then either look into forced induction or a v8 swap.
