Leaky Gas Tank

Hey folks,

I have a 2007 Canyon with 120k miles on it... Up until now, I have had no issues with the gas tank, as I know these trucks are notorious for the top metal ring rotting out and leaking... The other day, I filled the tank, and after a short drive, I was standing next to my truck talking to someone, and I caught a whiff of gas... I put the truck on the hoist, and pulled the fender liner out and sure enough, the top of the tank in the indentation where the fuel pump goes, was all damp with gas... I figured I was in for a new tank, until I noticed another strange problem cropping up.... First thing in the morning, and every time the truck sits for a while, it winds over longer than normal before starting... Normally it will crank for 1.5 seconds max before starting... First thing in the morning, I am looking at 4 seconds or so of cranking before fire.

Now I haven't dug into anything further, I will when I get more time, but this sounds like a pump or line problem doesn't it? I am sure that the tank top is bad as well, but that would not cause it to lose pressure in the fuel line between starts.. Sounds to me that when I shut the truck off, and it sits with 40psi in the line, that eventually it leaks out on to the top of the tank, and when I crank it over again, it needs to pump and crank longer to prime the line again...

Am I way off base here?

new fuel pump should solve all your issues. I had the same crank symptoms (maybe 2-4 seconds) and really bad smell of gas when my pump really started to leak a lot.

now that i have the new pump its like a new truck.

its not a bad job to do just make sure your tank is empty if you drop the tank. if you want you can also take the bed off and you should have access to the pump.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking... I am hoping its just the crappy plastic connectors going into the pump, but I have a whole pump ready to go incase thats the case. Give me a good opportunity to inspect the fuel filter as well.

Hummm, yup, don't see any problems here....

New pump, everything is good as new... Only thing not 100% is that the level sender must be slightly different voltage than OEM, because now my gauge does not go way over the full mark like it did in the past... It just barely hits the full mark.

lol damn thats a good looking pump! I had my servo motors in my gauge cluster fail, I got them all replaced so I didn't come across this issue. I came to conclusion by reading everyones posts you can never trust the gauges anyways! so its not a big deal if there wonky.

I'm still not over the fact that theres no gas warning light or message when you run it to almost empty. I think I got the most basic "modern truck" on the market at the time lol

I would rather it not show completely full, and give me more time on the empty, than go way over full when topped up, and then leave me on the side of the road with 1/8 still showing on the tank.

Yeah, you musta got the blue light special truck... I thought they all came with the light and message at low.

I thought my '04 didn't have a light or a "ding" when the fuel was low, but while cruising on the interstate at 80 MPH and listening to some old tunes on my cranked up stereo, I heard my music interrupted by a "ding". I looked and saw the low fuel on the dash for the first time ever and saw that my gas gauge was all the way on empty! I really didn't think I would make it to a gas station. I slowed down to about 60 and started looking for signs for an exit with a gas station. I made it. But now I know that I can go at least 12 miles when the thing "dings". But I've never let my gauge go that low since then. You might want to get a gas can and put a couple of gallons of gas in it and drive it really low just to see if you have the low fuel warning. I would have bet money that my truck didn't have one, but as I said, it does but it doesn't come on until you are absolutely at the empty line. No "smart person" would probably let their gauge get that low before fueling up.

I fill up every time my trip distance gets to 400KM then i know im pretty much empty. I might just drive it till it dies this time just to see if anything happens. (Ill keep a gas can in the back just in case)

we have 71L in our tanks? (19 Gal) Off hand i think I remember filling it up and i had 65L on that bill so I could of drove quite a bit more. I didn't have a warning pop up or ding with just under 2gal remaining.
