ok after getting my new tires i can hang with the rest o my buddies while offroading, matter of fact im a lil MORE capable than them, but i have one big problem... all the computer crap and water. im building a checklist of what HAS to get done to make these things better at water crossings. i wanna know if im forgetting something, hence the checklist.

Extend and filter vent on both diff's, Trans, and T case
seal off BCM and ECU.
Do something with the intake
beef up lower half of door weather stripping

I have a strong feeling im forgetting something, so if you know something else, let me know

Vents on the back of the cab. Also if you enter deep water with the fan turning you run the risk of shredding the blades.

itd be no higher than the bottom of the chrome half of the bumper, and the water id be crossing is like 10-12ft wide streams and shit like that, in and out. but is there anyway to keep the fan from turning? like an override just in case? im assuming the fans controlled by an electric clutch or something like that, so if i play with the wiring to it do you think id be able to get it to bypass it turning on?

Efan with manual override kill switch

The fan clutch is mechanical, no way to bypass it, you would need to go electrical.
But if the water is no deeper than the bottom of the chrome bumper, you probably don't need to worry about the fan.

all im saying is...PICS?!?!? and def write up a how-to when your done. i'm sure a bunch of people will be interested.

ill be starting to tackle everything but the fan issue tomorrow hopefully. got two days off and will be going out again this weekend most likely, so i wanna be ready at least with the computer stuff taken care of.

Where are the vents in the back of the cab? down by the floor? anybody got a pic of them?

yeah i had to run a couple cables through one of them last summer...if you have large hands its a serious challenge lol

im planning on taking the bed off for those... i gotta straighten it out anyways as i never got around to fixing the factory crookedness.

this is a rudimentary sketch of what i plan to do for those. basically a snorkel that goes over the vent between the cab and bed, thats skinny enough to fit between there, that goes up to almost the bottom of the bed with a 180* bend on it to prevent rain from going into the cab, but high enough up that there will be many more issues to confront before water goes in there.

general plan is to use some 2x4 steel stud baseplates.. and trim the side down to 1/2 inch. lay one on top of the other to make them a box, and solder them together to make them sealed. this way i get 4" wide so theyll cover the whole vent (hopefully), but at 1/2" thick theyll fit between the bed and cab. also they're cheap, and easy to work with, while not restricting the air too much and allow me to close the door

Feck... for some reason wont let me upload the sketch

Don't worry about the cab vents you should never be in that high...beefing up your weather stripping might help just remember never open your doors roll down the window if you need to get out or check how deep you are.

updates??

i got some water in my cab a couple months ago cus i was fooling around driving into a lake :D i wanted to see if it would leak in the cab and were. and sure enough i was drying that sucker out all day :)

im with lookout. why drive in a lake?

and i went and "waterproofed" the ECU/BCM, and extended the diff vents to higher up. so far ive had the tire almost completely submerged without a problem. but then again im crossing streams and shit like that so the water doesnt really have time to come in the doors
