Where on the engine would I have to go to tie in an oil pressure gauge? Do these engines have a sender already on them or do I have to mount one? And where would the easiest place to do it at?

heres what alldata says to do

Oil Pressure Diagnosis and Testing

Image

* Tools Required
* J 21867 Pressure Gage and Hose Assembly
* J 42907 Oil Pressure Tester

1. With the vehicle on a level surface. run the vehicle for a few minutes, allow adequate drain down time (2-3 minutes) and measure for a low oil level.
2. If required, add the recommended grade engine oil and fill the crankcase until the oil level measures full on the oil level indicator.
3. Run the engine briefly (10-15 seconds) and verify low or no oil pressure on the vehicle gage or light.
4. Listen for a noisy valve train or a knocking noise.
5. Inspect for the following:

o Oil diluted by water or glycol (anti freeze)
o Foamy oil

6. Remove the oil filter and install the J 42907.
7. Install J21867 or equivalent to the J42907.
8. Run the engine and measure the engine oil pressure.
9. Compare the readings to Engine Mechanical Specifications.
10. If the engine oil pressure is below specifications, inspect the engine for one or more of the following:

o Oil pump worn or dirty
o Oil pump screen loose, plugged, or damaged
o Oil pump screen O-ring seal missing or damaged
o Malfunctioning oil pump pressure regulator valve
o Excessive bearing clearance
o Cracked, porous, or restricted oil galleries
o Oil gallery plugs missing or incorrectly installed
o Broken valve lash adjusters Repair as necessary

11. If the wading on J 21867 or equivalent is within specifications, inspect for the following:

o Plugged or incorrect oil filter and/or malfunctioning oil bypass valve
o Malfunctioning vehicle oil pressure gage or sensor Repair as necessary

The hole specifications for the oil pressure sending switch are:
Thread: M16 x 2.0-6H
Thread Depth: 16.0 mm full thread
There is a 45 degree chamfer 2.8 mm deep to accomodate an O-ring

If someone really needs the detail GM drawing, I can fax them one or I may be able to E-Mail it.

Somewhere I saw an adapter that sandwiches between the oil filter adapter and the filter itself that has two threaded holes (probably US pipe threads) on the side. I think some of the gauge suppliers sell them. That may be the easiest solution. That way you could still keep the idiot light sensor in its original location.

Use the port 90° to the front of the truck from the stock sending unit. It's an M16x1.5 thread. You can find adapters M16x1.5 to 1/8NPT online or at autoazone. I also used a 1/8NPT elbow to turn the sending unit towards the passenger side.
