Rear View Camera

Anyone install a rearview camera? Im trying to figure out the wiring and such and it appears best place to tap into for a reverse signal would be the PRNDL switch on the tranny. From looking at wiring diagrams I think its the Pink wire right? No wait, the light green is the signal, the pink is the HOT-with-key-on. Wheres the best place to run the wiring into the cab? The grommet on the firewall? Im installing the Boyo license plate mounted camera btw.

i don't know about that camera, but i would think that it would plug into an ignition hot wire, a ground, and then have an RCA or S-video type cable to connect into your headunit or monitor. i would think that it would be a pretty simple setup.

This is from my write-up about the Avic-d3

It should work
How To: hook-up the reverse wire that works with the backup camera feature.

Step 1.) On the driver's side fender under the battery, there is a plug that has several different colored wires running from it.

Step 2.) There are 3 green wires going into it, you want the lightest green one. (the other two are more of a dark green/forest green color).

Step 3.) Use a tap-in the exact same way as the pink/navigation wire went into the speed sensor wire. So in this case it would be the tapping into the lightest green wire with the purple/white wire.

Sorry I didn't make it very clear, the camera itself I will ground to the frame and get power from the reverse light harness and of course run the yellow RCA into the cab to the Alpine brain.

But my question was where can i tap into for a reverse signal for the brain to switch into backup mie. But according to that post, that light green wire is what i need. Its the power from the PRNDL switch to the reverse lights. So thanks for answering that.

I was also wondering where the best place to run the yellow RCA cable from the camera into the cab and to the brain, which is located under the passenger seat. You guys think I should drill a hole in the cab somewhere or should i just run all the way to the bulkhead in through the grommet?

Ill go look, i just thought i'd be easier if anyone here has any experience with this. Honestly i'd rather just run the cable through that grommet rather than drilling another hole in my cab... iunno. It would be easier though, i might just look out for a good grommet. Anyone know where i can get a grommet, autozone?

Since the Alpine brain is under the passenger seat, would you recommend me drilling through the floor board under the seat somewhere and runnin the wire through there with a grommet?

#11 ·
Never thought of that. But its not that much further than the bulkhead grommet right? I might have to get an extension RCA cable since im not sure the cable is long enough.

You could use the parking brake cable grommet but what ever you do, clog up the hole with some silicone rubber or rubber puddy. I have seen so many leaks from shabby installs.
You'll notice one day a puddle of water on the floor and think WTF!

Anyways here's a pic of one of my installs: I used a 3/4" reamer bit with a 3/16 pilot.

I wish you lived closer man I would help you out!:high5:

i work at a stereo shop and we install these cameras all of the time, what you should do is run your power and ground to the back of the the deck and get them there, then hook your reverse wire up to the positive wire on your reverse light and run that wire to the revrse wire input on your deck, and dont forget to turn reverse cam inturrupt on, that setting is on the headunit

Thats kinda what I was thinking. I already have my Alpine IVA-D300 installed so all i need is to connect the reverse input signal from the light green wire (like mentioned above, from the reverse light switch) through the bulkhead and to the deck. Then I was thinking for powering the camera, to just tap into the reverse light harness near the rear bumper area basically where my LED Fire and Ice bar is hooked up for reverse lights. This way the only wiring i really need to run the length of the truck and into the cab would be the yellow RCA. Make sense?

#17 ·
yea that should work by the sounds of it, the only thing i would change is just tape your power, ground, reverse signal wire from the reverse light all to that yellow rca and run it to the front.... thats just my personal opinion but i would rather do all of my wiring in one spot up front and i know that getting power and gournd from the deck, and reverse signal from the light will garunteed work, i have done it countless times, and then everything is in the one spot, but its up to you man, to each there own

The only problem with that, is that 3 wires could possibly get spliced.

While you are correct (it should be getting power from the same source around the head unit)

But the way I look at it, (and I know izzy is not off roading) but when I am off roading, things are hitting the underside of the body, if a wire gets snagged and rips its something you have to fix. 1 wire is easier to fix then 3

And izzy if it were me, I would run the yellow video wire from the head unit (or brain) to just outside the cab, that way if you do for some reason have to remove it or it rips in half, you do not have to refeed the whole wire through the cab and deal with resealing

yes there is a possibly of geting them snagged, but if you are creative and take you time, there are many spots under our trucks to run wire, i have four runs of zero gauge wire going from the battery in the front of my truck, to the battery in the bed of my tuck and you cant even tell they are there and they have never got snagged and also 4 runs of large speaker wire from the cab to the bed and i have never had any issues

I was thinkin about just runnin the cable zip tied to the frame on top or something. Definately above the frame.

Ryan, so are you suggesting i just drill a hold through the floor then?

#22 ·
Naw. Mine has one longass RCA cable and 2 very short power and ground wires about 6 inches long. Like I said, i plan on just tapping into the reverse light harness to power up the camera when the reverse lights turn on.

OK i finally installed the camera but i was all wrong about it, the cable had the power and ground all hook up to the HU brain. But there's a problem, the power/ground wires are hella thin. Like smaller than 22 gauge. Its about as thin as dental floss no joke. So im wonderin, how the hell do i connect those wires to anything. The smallest spade connectors i can find are for 18-22 gauge wires. I tried folding the wire over onto its insulation to make it thicker but doesn't seem to make good contact. It's as though as if the wires are hairs, very tough to make contact. What can i do? Im thinkin i could add some solder to the wires to beef them up?

I want the connection to be removable so that i can disconnect it if need be. I guess im gonna try soldering some thicker wire to it and adding spade connectors to the thicker wire.

I got the Boyo license plate frame black camera.
