I have smoked mine and have passed inspection in Germany with them. I can't imagine anything illegal in the states that isn't illegal in this country. They failed me when I got for my Lakewood Traction bars. They told that because they had a forward facing edge they could cut somebody. I thought that if the traction bars are cutting somebody as I'm running them over, the cuts would be the last of their worries.

wrap em in pantyhose. lol it looks the exact same, and I was riding with my buddy who did it, got pulled over. And he asked to cop if he can take em off, he said yes. So he ripped them off and got out of a ticket.

Yea they give the same effect as smoked, you cant really tell unless you are up like on the truck. I always tell people to do for a month to see if the like the look of smoked or not, Its alot cheaper and easier then, VHT them.

az law stataes that as long as the light puts out the correct color(red rear white/amber front) and is visible up to 500 feet away day and night it doesnt matter what you do to them

I've studied the laws on this, and stay with red/amber in the back, and white/amber in the front. For your own safety first, and common sense/aesthetics second.

First off, I personally think there's just no improving on the stock lamps. they blend so well on the truck, they almost disappear anyway. On my red truck, they're all but invisible. I want custom tails, but aftermarkets look particularly ricey, like they just thought we'd accept that.

Painted lamps almost always come out looking VERY cheesy, and I'm being NICE.

Chrome Ram's-Head plastic overlays are nearly as ugly, to me anyways.

If you have a BLACK truck, or just want them "murdered out" a bit, I'd suggest modding the INSIDES!

Using the "headlamp bake" methodology, pop the backs off them, and build new lamp holders using parts of the stock parts, or, put a mesh inside the back of the lens and call it a day.

Embedding LED's directly into the lens would be a cool trick too, and they'd have a custom look with minimal effort.

With my CNC, I've been considering "inlaying" a pair of red skull faces. I got a pair of red plastic goblets at Halloween that look like a compatible material. A simple black tube would be inserted through the lens, and the face put into the middle of that, recessed, so it's only seen on braking. =A LOT of work for a silly idea. -Look who's talking....

A bazillion new pics on my site, if you know where it is...

I talked to a cop here in Arkansas and he told me: "tail light black outs or light tint are fine as long as the following vehicle can distinguish between the change from tail lights and brake lights from 500 ft." Guess it worked I never had a problem and I had my blazer's tails tinted for 2 years. I even had the third brake light tinted. They were black during the day. heres a pic:
