Tonneau Cover Rack

Has anyone ever considered (or done) a rack for their tonneau cover, kinda like a roof rack?

The idea has recently popped in my head. It could either go on top of the cover or on the under side. This has come to mind because when I get new skis I want to keep them out of the way of the other shit that could be bouncing around in my bed and it will clear up some space back there, too.

It will be some time before I try this, and I am going to have to do a few calculations for fitment. I was just curious what others thought. :D

well i know this might no help but they make a cover that is made of dimond plate and can hold up to 1200lbs on top. But what you could do is angle them so the tips go from the rear of the roof to the trailing edge of the cover. then they are not overhanging or causing any extra wind resistance.

Interesting...

man....I bet the Z71 Tahoe rack from like a 05 would look sweet on there
See, I'm thinking something maybe of that nature. I know it has been done with campers to put racks on them. I think that if it is done right, it can be done on a tonneau cover. figuring out the best spot/way of mounting them is probably going to be the hardest part.

See with the stock rack from a Tahoe the size is nearly perfect and you would only need a few holes drilled. They stick up a bit taller and beefier so it's a win win for looks.

If I had a cover I'd definitely be looking for that rack or one from an Armada.

Definitely going to have to look into this some more.

I had this idea a while back and really never got around to doing it. I was going to use mine for a basket mount to keep a full size spare and still utilize bed space for other stuff. I was looking into this Yakima mount system built to bolt on to fiberglass/steel.The whole system with mounts, towers, and crossbars would run about $300. I would like to see some pictures when you get yours going.

I initially thought about doing a basket, but I wasn't sure if a basket would become too bulky and heavy to open the cover. Will keep updated.

this is all ive seen.
The concept or idea is (as of now) similar to this

You may want to consider beefing up how your cover mounts to the bed. I had that idea with an Undercover tonneau that I knew could easily support the weight (I stand on it all the time). However, my concern was with the lateral forces on the cover while at speed -- that type of cover and the way it mounts wouldn't hold up to high-speed cornering. Not that I plan nor do I drive like a nut, but if something happens and I have to swerve, I'd prefer to not decorate the road with the contents of my rack. Just food for thought.
I'm not too worried about that aspect as it will not have that much weight where that would become a worry. It's really only gonna hold skis/snowboards for now. But I do see where you're coming from thought. If it becomes a basket someday, then I will check out that part more.

WhiteZ: This is the kind of rack you were talking about right? Because it's almost exactly what I had pictured in my mind when I started conjuring up this idea...

Yeah, that's what it will be. I just need to save the pennies and do the search. :th_woot:

Alright. I am going to be looking for it to be lower as it will be attached to the top of the cover so it can open and close.

I think I would taks a few measurments and go to a salvage yard and see whats there......if you have a YOU PUL IT yard close by. You never know what you may find that would work out for that. There have been a shit ton of vehicles with a luggage rack of some kind.

Just walked the lot and a Patriot roof rack looks like a WIN for your idea.

Yeah, that's what I'll do. It probably won't be until may when I can go check the salvage yards. I'll do that at home. Just getting an idea of what I am looking at now.

Jeep liberty eh? Never even thought of that. might have to check into that some more too.

The biggest limiting factor I see with this project is width. We'll see though.
