it can be done look up you tube gmc canyon i4 its turboed up push 400 hp to the wheel allhe did was up grade his piston and rods it can be dont you can find a turbo kit for yourcar for around 1200 with the upgrades u have to make if your mechanically inclined youll spend a total of 2000 or 2500 you can put a turbo on anything ppl

$4k or a little more. There is no supercharger kit available. There are some turbo kits out there, but if they've been tested by anyone, they haven't posted it anywhere. Trick performance makes a turbo kit and STS makes a universal kit.

There's nothing really to test with a turbo kit. Besides sizing its one of those things that has to work it has no choice. If it doesn't make enough power turn then the knob.

For ease of installation and not haveing someone break it off in you for a manifold the sts universal might be a better option. Just call them and tell them what you want to do and what your doing it with.

07coloradoBLK- a v8 swap isn't in everyones budget nor knowledge

If you need info on LSX swaps there are some members there that have done them.

I'm in the works of doing one, but ran out of money! I have some pics in my member pic album!

I think a V8 swap would be cheaper than a turbo also. Especially if you can get a low mileage engine out of the bone yard. Or, I plan on looking for an I5 moving out to make way for V8.

Depends on the kind of parts used. You can get super cheap turbos online but I don't know the reliability of daily driving with them. In the long run you would be much happier with a v8. Low end torque is awesome.

You could build you a cheap sts style turbo set up for probably 5-6 hundred before tunning. But that is bottom of the barrel parts. Then again you could buy a kit from trick performance for 3500 or whatever, big price difference

Same with the v8-really cheap junk yard motor or wait for a nice 6.0 to come your way

damn thats pretty cheap...why dont people do more turbos...I dont think i could build one...I have talked to trick...but dont think i would want to throw that much money...i want one for like about 2000 to 2500

For me it's an issue of limitations. There's a lot more potential with a V8. I could install a turbo on my I5, but for a comparable price I could do a V8 swap and gain the same amount of power. But if I want more power with the turbo, I'm still limited by the capabilities of the I5 (and the best anyone's produced is 350hp on the 3.5, though I have the 3.7). With the V8, I can build it to make more power or put a turbo or supercharger on that.

You're even more limited having the I4, though.

Because they are scared of the unknown. They know v8s work so they go that route. Dude on ls1tech was pushing 20 or 21 pounds on the stock i5 before chunked a rod.( A sleeve started to move. A problem with the earlier atlas engines) And made just shy of 400 hp on previous dyno pulls. I think that was at 13-14 pounds.

There are a few making power in the i5, jesse had a bottle on his, txcoloradoss had a bottle and was running low 12s on the i5.(Activated the nitrous to low is what killed it- oops)

I don't think anyone really knows the limit for the engines in our trucks

The only thing left in my turbo build is a manifold and everyone wants to break it off in my ass price wise.

i like mine...its got an ms1 on it...its pushin like 300 horses and keeps up wit my buddys sti....on a roll that is...damn all wheel dirve gets me on a dig..

#20 ·
well i would just soon put the turbo on my truck..I dont want to spend 4 grand on a v8...and then another 4 grand on a turbo for it....after drivin the new v8...and not feelin really that much difference, it seems like the v8 would take a lot of money to get it goin..

#22 ·
Very true. I think the thing here is that its going to cost relatively the same no matter which route you go and you are going to see similar HP numbers either way. Yes you can do more after you drop a V8 in, but you're going to spend more money on a new rear end, tranny upgrades, power adders, etc. So in the end, just do whatever you want to do.

the fun way would be a turbo... you get the cool sound and is gas friendly

if you want a project ... do an ls1, you get same effect and can upgrade it down the road if you get bored of it. plus exhausts and such will sound meaner with 8 cylinders.

go ahead with the turbo, you just need to get a few things....

60lbs Delphi Multec 2 style (pencil style) injectors
Precision turbo sc6162 t3 0.63
38mm wastegate
tial q bov
generic intercooler
and abunch of piping...

those are my suggestions atleast. You could probably use that kevlar flex pipe if your lazy and cheap. You wouldn't be running that much boost to care about the expansion. I don't suggest a rear mount turbo though... i think the turbo lag is dangerous

with a 10lbs boost you'd get like 276 RWHP 323 LBS/FT-TQ... atleast with a 3.5

#27 ·
You'd do better than that on a 3.5. But's he's running the I4, so he probably won't even make those numbers. Whereas a 5.3 will be making right around 300hp without any mods.

I wouldn't swap an LS1, either. Gen III swaps are much more involved than Gen IV swaps in our trucks.

#28 ·
CP can do a standard LS1 swap +tranny for 7-8k . Thats the quote they gave me as of last night.

Or a turbo of your own for 3-5k.

Just depends on what you can afford. You'll notice a huge difference on both of them. People here still rejoice over a supposed 10hp CAI.... I can't image how they'd feel with some boost.

if your going to go turbo then dont port the head. its waisted money. i bet you can make 275 your tune better be spot on though. what kind of lobe seperation you got on the cams? needs to be kinda wide for boosted applications

Damn you sound like me lol

I'm not sure if I'm going to finish my turbo kit or not. I need a manifold and the cheapest price I got was 600 from trick performance......lame. Plus I could sell it to fund the trans am project

I got a guy that builds manifolds for a living and its the last thing he wants todo when he comes home
