Cylinder Misfire

I am a new owner of an 05' zq8 /I5/ Crew cab (had it about two weeks) it has 74k on it.

It was running great until three days ago. Check engine light came on!!

Had it diagnosed at AutoZone.....#0305 _Misfire in Cyl #5

Changed plugs, changed coil, changed both O2 sensors (not all at once..code kept appearing so i kept digging). The code still pops up about 20 minutes after I reset it. I know some have taken theirs to the dealer due to intake gasket, exhaust value issues. Doesn anyone have any concrete causes for this?

I will have to wait a few days because I want to make sure it isn't the gas either. I put 93 oct and some 104 fuel injector cleaner /octane booster in it before the engine light issue. (This was was about two days before the engine light issue which makes me feel it isn't the gas).

Also, is it true engine issues are covered until 100k? I saw a link on an older thread to a bulletin on CFforums but I'm not a member there.

It runs great but the idle does seem a bit twitchy at times. Acceleration is good as well.

ANY HELP is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much

Jae

You guessed it brother. Sorry to say but you need to do the dredded leak down test. And yes..100k OR 7 years..Is what I believe it is anyway.

Gulp!! what makes the leak down test dreaded?

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Is there anything I need to say or bring to keep the dealer from trying to put this off on anther issue or trying to tax my wallet?

It is...the 07 and newer are good to go for everything. But the older engine were good till 100k only on some things.

What i am thinking is the infamous head issue..which IS covered....
Have the dealer do the leak down test and hopefully they can find out what it is for sure. IF it is the head issue..you basically get a new top end or engine or something like that...I am one of the few who have never(knock on wood) had the head issue.

Thank you all so much for the info...I will get it to the dealer next week.

I am now noticing a faint 'pop' when I turn off the ignition as well. This hasn't been happening so I feel this is part of the issue. It's the last noise you hear when the truck shuts off...a faint 'pop'

Funny thing is the 'engine light' has gone off for the moment.

Should the light be on before I take it to the dealer?

It will HELP...But the code is stored in the ecm anyway so they will still be able to bring it up man. Your good to go bro...Just take it to the dealer and mention this TSB. That will let the dealer know you have done yoru research and know what yoru in for. that way he doesnt try to bullshit you... If ya fail the test..you get a new one free...so if I were you, i would hope for a F! LOL

Thanks Will. This is one time in my life I will hope to fail :) I don't know what else it could be.

The information shared in this thread saved me $100.00's I could have just throw at it trying to fix it.

Again, thanks everyone and I will give updates as I go through the process

Well, hopefully if anyone else see's this they WON'T waste the cash. That's the whole idea. Good luck on your F and post up what ya find bro. Later..

Well darn it...I missed that part. Thanks Will

Cool..I can live with three days. Hope mine will be the same or less. As long as it is done correctly is the key :)

ooh crap. i think i have a head issue. but i have a recal sticker on my core support...

i get a ton of cylinder 2 misfires and CEL's with the P0446 evap vent leak at the same time  changed plugs at 100k and put a new coil in yesterday and deleted all the codes. now i have another CEL this morning :hulk:

god i try and sell the truck and shit hits the fan!!!

i also have an 3.5l in an 05 with 130k on the clock

i replaced the canister 6 months ago and i came back on and i put a new gas cap on and it came back again....

when i put on the 3" bl i didnt have the fuel filler neck extensions so i left if just floating around behind the gas door. im afraid i have a craked vent pipe.

i'll grab pics of the recall sticker and the filler neck here in a sec

Does anyone know how long the dealer normally takes to repair the intake gasket issue? I know some dealers push TSB jobs to the back burner. Anyone who has had this repair, please share how long the dealer took to resolve.

I would hate to be out my ride for weeks.

Thanks

EVERY dealer is gonna be different..But fixxer already said his was a 3 day turn around..

#27 ·
Its all good. Well, good luck man. Hope you get it fixed or everything works out in your favor.

Just dropped my truck at the dealership. No matter how prepared you are with your information (head knowledge, paperwork, etc), it seems that the dealer is ALWAYS trying to figure out how to get out of fixing your vehicle for free.

Dealer- "A TSB doesn't mean we will fix it for Free"

Me - "If it's under the extended warranty it does"

Dealer - "We'll check it out and let you know"

The saga continues. I will keep everyone informed during the process.

I'm so ready to get this behind me so I can start doing a few mods :)

#29 ·
EXACTLY! LOL They will try their best to get out of it man. Oh well, fuck'em. IF it fails the leak down they have no other choice.

Hopefully everything goe's the way you wish it to brother!!!

#30 ·
OTOH, if it's the head issue, you'll have a complete new head/valves for free.

My '05 went at about 30k, a tiny dealership in a small town in western New York replaced the head and had it back to me in 5 hours.
At 85k now it's still running great.

Most dealers are fairly slow right now, so you mite get it done fairly quick once they get done dicking around the warranty bull $hit issues.

#32 ·
so does your truck have to be under extended warenty to get this done for free? and do you need the actual letter for the recal or can you just print it off off-line? becasue im still getting CEL for cylinder misfires after new coil. but they seem to turn on and off on thier own sometimes.

but im the second owner and i think it already went in for the Head issue. so im not sure if they wil ldo it again.

Your truck has to fall within the VIN# range (2004 thru part of 2006) and be within 100K miles or 7 yrs to get it replaced for free. It's not a recall, its a TSB for trucks that have the issue. Not all trucks will experience the issue. Your recall sticker would be for something else.

Like JrByers said, try swapping the coils. If it follows the coil: bad coil. If it stays the same: bad spark plug or possible head issue. My truck would throw the code off and on, and I was down to 40% compression on cylinder #3 per the leak down test.
You can always call your dealership, give them your VIN and ask if it has had the head replaced, and if there are any open recalls.
