I used to hate these trucks...

...Now I think they're pretty ok.

Hi everyone. My name is Tyler. I purchased by Colorado in July on happenstance. I went down south to buy what would have been my 6th S-Series truck (A 93 Blazer in this case) but it was complete junk, so on the way back I stumbled upon this on Craigslist for a steal and bought it.

It's a 2005 Colorado 3.5 Automatic. Runs and drives great. Drove it back 6 hours towing my Saturn on a dolly and still got 19 MPG.

Lowered it, put some 4wd flares on it, air shocks, installed cruise thanks to this forum, and done countless other little things

The garden edging actually doesn't look bad. Probably prefer that over the OEM air dam.

Welcome to the nation!

Fun fact: I sold Tyler on how awesome these trucks are by demonstrating the dual position tailgate cables lol.

He has also installed a bee-do light.

Yes. And 'SERVICE' magnets, which I install for shows. (Alex hasn't seen these)

I had more fun with that truck in a week then I did with almost every other vehicle I've had lol.

And thanks for all the welcomes everyone!

I wasn't really sold on these trucks either before I bought one. I had a couple older S10 4x4 trucks and liked those. Went full-size for years and needed a newer truck. All the nicer full-size trucks cost more than I wanted to spend. I saw this 04 Colorado that looked great for a decent price, around 5K. The local dealer originally priced it much higher but discounted it because I guess it wasn't selling. I test drove it and thought, this isn't too bad. Enough truck for what I need to haul and tow a small trailer. Fuel economy isn't quite as good as I had hoped for, mine has 4.10 gears which probably has a lot to do with that. Makes for a pretty quick truck(even towing my trailer) but im getting about 17-18 mpg in mixed driving each week. I probably could still get at least 20 mpg if I never hauled or towed anything but the reason I want a truck is to use it. Ride is a bit stiff, another characteristic of the Z71 package I assume. All in all, I probably will keep it for a while. I may go back to a Silverado in a few years but for now the Colorado fits the bill.

My 2WD gets 24 and got 27 going on a trip a few weeks ago. Should be even better now with a new water pump, correct temp thermostat, and spark plugs.

I absolutely hated them back when they came out also. Was hanging on to my last s10 to LS Swap it someday. Found out these were offered with a V8 ZQ8. Spent a few months searching. Almost gave up and settled on a used 1st gen CTS-V. Then found the color I had hoped for an hour away. Jumped out of bed on a Saturday morning like a bolt of lightning. Hauled butt up there, calling GM dealer to check the VIN for any previous warranty work. Everything checked out and I wasn't walking away. Paid about 1K more than I wanted, but I had already checked into shipping costs from other states for other 3LT package trucks across the US. It was 2K plus.

I will hit 150,000 miles on my way to work today. It's been the best vehicle I have owned to date.

I'm sure the 2wd versions all get better fuel economy. Less weight and smaller tires, not to mention sitting lower and not as much drag going at highway speeds. Probably not geared as low either, also helping with fuel economy. I had a friend who years ago had a 4 cyl 5 speed regular cab and was getting 30 mpg. Another friend had an old Toyota with the same configuration and would get similar mileage. My 91 S10 4x4 ext cab I had years ago with auto and 4.3 got around 21-22 mpg. It was a great towing rig for a smaller truck too, easily pulled a 6x12 trailer with 3 atvs on it and still got 17 mpg doing that on a trip to Kentucky and back. This truck would probably perform equally as well except for fuel economy. I'd guess with that much weight, probably around 2800lbs or so, I'd expect maybe 13-14 mpg.

This truck happens to have 3:42 gears and it being 2WD helps alot. S10s were the same way fuel economy wise 2WD vs 4WD. The additional weight and drag from the 4WD system really hurts it.

It's funny how S10 people DETEST these trucks until they drive one. lol.

I was one of them at one point lol. When my sonoma blew its head gasket I almost decided to just get a car. I was going to get a cruze but then the dealer asked me if I really wanted to go from a truck to a car. So they showed me a red 2wd crew cab 2006 Chevy Colorado, but the bumpers were peeling and rusty and they wanted 8k for it, but I test drove it anyways and I loved it. Then I tried talking them down on the price and they didn't seem to want to budge nor seemed interested in selling for what ever reason, then they showed me the 2005 GMC Canyon which was black crew cab 4x4 Z71, at that truck I instantly fell in love with and is the one I have today.

I can see how these trucks have such a strong following, I don't think I was ever as attached to my sonoma as I am with my 355. Even after my head issue with the 3.5 I still went ahead and dropped a 3.7 in it rather then giving it up like I did with my sonoma when it blew its head gasket.

I had a 94 Silverado 4x4 with a 350 a few years ago that was set up to run on either regular gasoline or propane, was used a a delivery truck for canisters. It had a large tank in the bed under the toolbox. There was a toggle switch under the dash to switch it from propane to gas. Back when the truck was new, propane was cheap. By the time I got the truck over 15 years later(paid $1000 for it) there wasn't much incentive to use propane. I had the tank removed and took it to a local mechanic who adjusted the timing to run better on gasoline. It wouldn't idle very well when set up to run both, kept wanting to die whenever you stopped.

I use to lay a lot of that stuff so I picked up on it right away I just might add that to a big list of what I would like to add to my truck , my air dam broke twice so I cut it off, now I have a cheep way to replace it.
