Hey all. Been poking around on here for a few days. I Just bought a used and in great shape 2008 2.9L 4X4 WT 5Speed.

Love this truck but hate the motor. All that power at 5000RPM and nothing at 2200 RPM where you typically roll around. I feel like I might as well not have 5th gear.

I know it's not a 5.3 but com'mon.... All vehicles have a list of "popular Mods" one should make when owning a vehicle. what is the run-down on this truck please?

Can anyone give me the cliff notes version for 2008 WT 2.9L 4x4 5SP , stock height/tires?

I drive a lot but mostly highway. I live in western PA so mostly hilly. If it had the power it does at 4500 RPM at 2100 RPM I'd be in absolute love with this truck. I have some things I've been eyeing up but I'll ask specific questions about mods after i get some feedback from the experts. I don't want to spoil the response by mentioning a current idea I have.

If there is a post and I missed it. I apologize. Like I said. Noob. Thank you in advance for your help.

^^ I can't attest to an intake and exhaust but like he said the tune and efan I can. Also, a ported throttle body with the tune woke it up a bit too.

Thank you both. anyone else?

My plan was:

-Tune. but was leaning toward Diablo inTune since I don't know of any local shops.
-efan. Makes sense. Even newer Silverado's have E-Fans why wouldn't a 4 banger?
-Cat-back duals. More for looks. Probably make it perform worse
-Looking at the header at cat. 106k on the truck so might be time for a new cat anyway.

x Looked at boosting- not going to. Seems that's becoming a dead end.
x Looked at spray- not afraid to but I want the power there always.

New ideas:
Supermod TB
Tune by Gerry? Not sure who that is yet.

new questions:
-What intake mod? Haven't found that posted yet.
-what exhaust mod? Haven't found that posted yet.
-What's the best way to get a tune?

I appreciate that. I'm 30 minutes N/E of down town. I travel a lot too, so I am not afraid to drive. And I'm not opposed to a road trip to NJ either. In fact, I have work sites near James "From what I can tell" and could incorporate this into one of those. (Stroudsburg, PA. Sayreville, NJ etc.)

so TB Port, E-Fan, Tune, what else?

I understand. That said, I remember back in the day with another car I had. At WoT the belt broke. It was like someone hit the NoS.

Point is I, without experience, think that a throttle body port, tune, and electric fan conversation may be a good place to start. Like I said. I'm not trying to turn this truck into a 12 sec. 1/2 ET. I'm just trying to use 5th gear in Western PA.

would love to. but I need this to be hyper-drivable daily driver.

Two weeks ago I drove it from Pittsburgh, PA to Aurora, IL, drove around Chicago for work and drove back. 1,400 miles that week alone. I need to make this exact same trip probably 3-4 more times in the next 6 months. so I need to be cautious that I don't break it's reliability.

This would be why I don't buy new cars, too...... Truck did great, though,...once I got out of PA. you can set the cruise control at 73 MPH in 5th gear once you leave the hills of PA and it'll hold. But living out in the country, secondary road, 45/55 MPH, Might as well call this a 4 speed.

So I think I have what I need. I'm looking to follow Jaymes's blueprint.

that being: Header, exhaust, intake, all the supermod stuff, and a tune.

I know that I said I don't plan to race the truck and I don't but it would be fun just to see the difference. so I'm going to take it to Pittsburgh Raceway park to get a base 1/4 ET time-slip. we'll do the mods and I'll take it back to run it post mods. I'll post the resulted here. I haven't drag raced anything since I left the Army about 15 years go so I'm sure a better driver would turn a better time. do go there. Just is just so folks can gauge what the mods did.

thank you everyone and Stay Tuned.....

Get a tune and expect to loose some gas mileage, ultimately you gotta pay to play man. Even on hills, I'd stay in lower gears, that's just the facts of gravity and the power band of this little motor, it likes high RPMs to get into that sweet spot and that's also where most of it's torque is at.

Personally, I don't see it being a big deal if mileage is a concern as I've had to learn how to take hills in my truck without having to stay in 4th alot. You learn to pick up speed on the descent to make up for the drag on the ascent up the hill, just make sure you keep an eye out for cops, haha!

Please don't misunderstand. I'm not worried about mileage. My other car is a '94 suburban. My previous truck was a k2500 May it RIP.

Back in my hay day I grew up on square body S-10s. The 1982 2.8 V-6 was rated at 110 HP and to me, it way way more drivable with 342:1 or better 373:1 that this 2.9 is. But that v-6 would fly apart at 5000 RPM. You wouldn't win any drag races with them but they did what they needed to do. I don't feel it should be required to turn 5000 RPM to drive around. That's all. These are trucks. Not Crotch Rockets.

If I have to buy more gas, that's easy. I just don't want to make it so tuned up it's not reliable.

@DaVinster I'm getting about 30 +mpg at 65 easily and before my tune 28 mpg highway. I'm getting 28-29 mpg city if I keep off the gas pedal the whole time after limeswap tune. This is all confirmed my filling up, reseting trip to zero, running tank to 1/4 mark, filling up all the way, then using the trip divided by how much gas I used. Exact numbers used when doing calculations.
