Hey guys,
I know I know I am not the only one that has been looking to get a roof rack for the Colorado or Canyon. I did my research about makes and models of after market racks, looked around at lots of stock racks from many makes and models of vehicles. I personally have not had luck with Yakima/Thule racks. The last Yakima Q-tower rack that I had was on an Audi A4 and it ruined the paint on the roof and inside the door jam due to the feet and clips so I was really trying to go for the Stock rack perminently installed. Also, I beleive this stock rack has a lower overall height then the Yakima/Thule rack.
I started with the stock rack from a Chevy Blazer which almost worked but I could not get the right angle for the mounts so I kept looking around. I finally found a 2004 Chevy Avalanche with a roof rack that worked perfectly from a junk yard for $25. I had to make a few modifications to the length and width but once I was done it mounted nicely to the roof, sealed up with no leaks and holds plenty of weight. I was so sure of the weight capacity I had my wife take a few pictures of me standing on the rack without it warping at all. I weight approximately 170lbs and I am sure it could hold way more. The 6 Large mounts dispurse the weight very well.
I tried to do a "How-To" but there was a lot of question about safety and leaking so it was not approved.
Next I am planning on getting a Yakima, Thule or Rola basket with some lights.
I know this is not a "How-To" but I would like to express the following statement to protect anyone who considers doing this:
"The staff and the associated members are in no way responsible for any damages, injuries or other harm inflicted to your vehicle or yourself which may result in attempting these modifications."
