Switching to Full Synthetic Oil

Hi All,

I am switching to Full Synthetic in May and I have a few questions:

My 05' Crew cab has 77k on it, is there anything I need to do prior to making the switch? (sludge cleaner, Seafoam, etc)

Actually, I would like to run Seafoam in it a few miles right before the change over, will this adversely affect the synthetic?

Are there any side effects to running synthetic in our trucks?

What filter suggestions?

Thanks everyone.

Well this will blow up later on today!

I started with Mobile 1 at 9k thur 31k, then I switched to Royal Purple and haven't looked back. I have it in my motor, rear diff, power steering and their additive in the coolent.

Yeah the Sea Foam treatment before hand will be a good thing.

Switching over to a synthic oil will only benefit your drivetrain over the long haul.

I just did my first real oil change after breaking my truck in. I like Mobil 1 w/GM filter
using Syn oil is a matter of what U LIKE. everybody will have a diff opinion. as for
filters, i have seen oil press drops on many of them, GM filters always hold good.

My '08 Canyon just turned over to 40,000.
I'm also thinking of going synthetic or blend in the engine.
Not sure what to do about the rest of the drivetrain.
Suggestions for filters would be helpful.

I did put a K&N intake filter on it a few thousand miles ago.
Not sure if that was the best bet, but I'm giving it a try.

Also, is there any benefit to running 10-40 or 20-50 oil? or stick with the 5-30?

Curiosity question, does synthetic help you run cooler or does the engine temps goup? I went a different route, and reduced my engine temps in the process. Went to 15w40 Blended diesel oil. Temps never get to the half way mark on the gauge anymore, and oil stays cleaner over the 5000 mile change. It was a suggestion from a Mechanic friend of mine. I have been satisfied so far, just curious about opinions and what kind of synthetics might do the same thing in the temp department?

What are the change intervals? For prices between $6 and 9 a quart the change intervals have to be longer than 3 months/ 3,000...I would hope so :)

5K-7K is the norm. with synthetics. I do have a warning for you though if your motor is at 77K and been running traditional oil. I wouldn't switch to synthetic in your case with out using a blended synthetic/traditional oil for a change or two before. Typically when you go from non-synthetic to synthetic on higher mileage the valvetrain will get a little noisy.

Well the AmsOil I run is 15K mile intervals... and that's considered Severe Driving!

Amsoil Synthetic 5w30 and AmsOil Ea Filter = No worries for 15K!

Ive heard those who run diesel 15w40 and have no problems at all. But with thicker oil comes worse performance, response, and gas mileage (in theory). If you want to improve all of those, stick with a synthetic 5w30, or if you want to be frisky like Rich, go 0w30.

Great info everyone...thxs

Especially doing the change over with a blended prior to going full synthetic.

hey DigEm, you do realize that diesel oil is going to screw up your cat. those oils
have more zinc and other stuff it it. i use it in my HD because it has all that zinc
that the oil people removed because it contaminates the cats. all the good anti
scoff stuff has proven detrimental to cats. its hard to explain in am e-mail.

What everyone missed about the "Diesel Oil' is that todays diesel's also have CAT'S
along with particle filters. I am running the 15W40 oil in every thing I have from 2.0 Mitzies to 15 ltr. kitties. and with the spark ingintion equip, I will get over 350M miles/20M hours,,,and have never replaced a cat!

If I lease a vehicle should I use synthetic oil? Should I even bother changing it? Just check the level once a year and add some Pep Boys to it if it's down. Filter should keep it clean as its OEM, and isn't that the best? I'm only going to have it for three years and give it back. WTF? LOL.

Made the switch yesterday...I went with Mobil 1 for high mileage vehicles and a K&N filter for the first change. I will go with regular Mobil 1 or Amsoil for all additional changes; unless there is a reason I shouldn't. All seems well thus far.

using the Castrol Edge titanium tech(gold bottle)

seems pretty good

were running it in the canyon
the 89 c1500 and the 07 sedona

Just a little tidbit for those guys running K&N Oil filters...they are built for K&N by Wix. The Wix filter has the same insides as the K&N, But it does not cost as much! And according to this link Best Oil Filter – Reviews and Rankings | Bestcovery, these are the top five made and why. There list says Purolator Pure 1, Mobile 1 Extended Performance, Purolator Classic, Wix, and Baldwin, in that order.
