Taking the plunge on an LS2 TBSS swap

I picked up what I thought was a great deal on a wrecked 07 TBSS for $1500 with the goals of swapping the LS2/4L65e into my 2008 3.7L Colorado. Being a 2007 TBSS it should have the 58x/4x reluctors and an E67 PCM which will increase the plug-and-play factor of the swap as I'm reasonably sure I can use the LS2 harness instead of having to buy a Colorado V8 one. My shopping list for other necessary parts is as follows, please let me know if I've overlooked anything!

Additional Parts:
-Colorado V8 Radiator/Hoses/Heater Hoses
-Colorado factory V8 motor mounts
-Colorado V8 AC Lines
-Colorado V8 power steering lines (Assuming the TBSS lines wont be long enough or the right size and the 3.7L lines wont work with the V8?)
-Intake solution (TBD)

Tasks:
-Modify my current 3.7L supermod Efan kit to fit the V8 radiator
-Modify the TBSS downpipes as necessary to clear the frame/trans/front driveshaft and then weld up a single exit catback section to use the factory exhaust hanger locations.

Anything I'm missing?

Good luck with your swap, I don't think
the TBSS exh will fit. a few have tried the
TBSS headers and had little success with them.
there are some good/cheap Collly V8 headers
on e-bay. check them out. saves a ton of work
doing your exh system. if you need to look at
a V8 truck you can check mine out.

That'd be great, I'm planning on picking up the TBSS from the auction soon and use the balmy 50 degree weather we're expected to have this weekend to tear into it. Likely wait till spring to pull the motor from my Colorado and do the swap since my Genesis Coupe is not snow-rated in the least. That should give me time to collect parts, refresh the LS2/4L65e a bit with them out and on the stand, and get a base tune on the extra E67 ready so I can do the swap over a weekend and have it running again.

The shop i deal with in West Chester. CSP does
Dyno/street tunes.

Cool, as a software engineer I'm debating whether to just get an HPTuners license and do it myself or not. I'm pretty much just looking to do the compare between the two stock tune files and copy over the TBSS data relevant to the engine to my Colorado's E67, and then probably finally correct the tire size for the Silverado wheels I put on it so the speedo/odometer is accurate. Being that this truck is my daily I'm not going to be trying to make any more than the factory 400 ponies the LS2 puts out. One small modification I might try to make in the tune would be to enable the EFan output and use that to drive the Supermod fan kit instead of the inline coolant temp sensor it uses now.

04colyZQ8 is good for wiring harness mods.
if you run into probs with what you have now.
Supermod adds the wires from the PCM for the fan output.
when tuning them to run.

From looking at other people's swaps and researching I've arrived at the following assumptions that I'll personally confirm during this process:

- Factory i4/i5 power steering lines can be reused
- TBSS manifolds and downpipes/y-pipe will fit with minor modifications (confirmed for 2wd, I'll be testing for 4x4)
- 3.7L radiator can be reused, worst case if that's not enough cooling the 5.3L radiator is ~$90 and a drop in replacement
- i4/i5 fuel line can be reused

One question - what the hell is "TBSS"? So often on this site I feel that there's some secret language out there that I simply do not understand. When you all get together at a meet somewhere, is there also a secret handshake?
Just trying to keep up. When my daily driver was my Pontiac Bonneville SSEi, and I spent a lot of time on the "bonnevilleclub" forum, there was actually a constantly updated post for "common abbreviations and slang", which I visited a lot. Just a suggestion to help us folks out that are still relatively new to the site. Possibly, this is an abbreviation that everyone knows but me.

Damn that's a nice TBSS.

You never see Trailblazers without the roof rack unless its been modified.
Did the SS models come with shaved roof?

Being that the Rad is 10yrs old I would throw a new one
in for the hell of it. there cheap enough.

Actually it's about a year old now. I had to replace it when I rebuilt the truck, bought it from a salvage auction with a pretty minor front end collision for $1700. It needed a new bumper, grille, headlights, condenser, and radiator. But the radiator support was pretty much unscathed so besides needing to use a come-along to pull the driver's side post that the top of the bumper mounts to on the frame back vertical and cutting the spotwelds and welding in a new driver's side tab where the grille clips in it was all bolt-on repairs.

That reminds me, I should update that old rebuild thread with all my recent shenanigans and take some pictures tomorrow of the TBSS teardown. :D

You could of bought my 5.3 it's ready to
drop in a Colly, even has the exh manf's
and a cam that go with it. just needs the front accs.
I would even have delivered it. hahaha

Not a bad deal for someone looking to move to the V8! I plan to do the whole swap essentially for net zero cost and get a 4L70e and a 6.0 out of it. By the time I part out the rest of the the SS interior and all, along with the coveted wheels, I'll likely have made back the $1500 I spent on it if not more, then the sale of the current 3.7L and trans should offset the cost of a majority of the odds and ends i'll need to get the 6.0 running.

You won't be able to use the e67, and harness as is from the 07 trailblazer but it's a good start. I can help with the wirring and programming. Go tuners will certainly help! Great start having the tbss. I'd go with obx Colorado v8 hearders. Or stock manifolds.

#25 ·
Yeah because the tbss has the pass through for the half shaft? Might not work? I have a Brocken lh8 pan and baffle, dipstick, could be alluminum welded? In case yours doesn't fit? But I think the new lh8 pan is pretty cheap

#26 ·
The tbss oil pan will def not work. I already have a full size truck pan ready to go but Had some spare time and the tb/envoy pan so I figured id test it out and save and others the headache. No worries tho, truck pans are cheap. Good luck with the build.

I also just tried the driverside trailblazer/envoy exhaust mani and it didnt work. You could possible trim the motor mount down but still dont think it will work. I suggest picking up the v8 coly manifold. The passenger side is the same so youre good there

#28 ·
Yeah I wasnt planning on keeping the TBSS oil pan, going to pick up the V8 colorado pan kit with pickup tube and baffle. As far as the pcm issue if both my colorado and the TBSS use the e67 pcm then why wouldn't the TBSS engine harness plug right into my e67? Obviously I'd have to reflash the PCM to understand that there's a 6.0L V8 there and not a 3.7L I5 anymore.

That's good info about the exhaust, I knew it was a little too optimistic to think the TBSS manifolds would clear everything alright but 1 out of 2 isnt bad and I can just get a V8 colorado driver's side manifold easy enough.

Project went on hold for a little due to weather and me finding that my rocker panels were already rusting through below the rear doors. Definitely want to get that all cut out and replaced, and make sure the chassis is in good shape before I do the engine swap. In the meantime I've also been cleaning up the LS2 a bunch and going over it. Planning on doing all the gaskets, checking lifters, swapping water and oil pumps, and a couple other maintenance items while it's out and on the stand. Plus I need to give the 4L70e a good inspection too and probably replace the clutches and other seals/wear items.

Well the tbss 07-09 has the pcm, by the left front battery, and all three plugs go into it!! J1, blue, j2 black , j3 grey. There is a massive inline body plug no were near the Colorado pcm that's mounted on the right fire wall!! The Colorado body plug j1 blue is hard wired to the entire dash cab harness! And the fuse boxe plugs are different. So far from plug and play:) sorry to say

The 3.7l pcm can be flashed to a trailblazer ss, but the cruise, starter, and gas pedal from the Colorado won't work then. If you use a 2009 Colorado 5.3l tune then the gas pedal, cruise Ignition switch will all work from the 3.7l Colorado. The pcm is complicated and hp tuners, efi, tuner cat would be lucky to define half the tables available in the pcm file. You can't copy compare your tbss to the Colorado tune file, as your only copying half the tables at best, you'd likely cause the throttle to go into reduced power, from the miss match tables. Even if you use the trailblazer pedal, and a custom ignition switch you'd still need a tune anyway!! Because the minute you change the maf and air filter box, and exhaust, you need a tune regardless. Best way is to start with a 09 Colorado 5.3l, then tune the maf, ve spark tables with a dyno for your 6.0l. Also the tcm will freak out with a 07-08 trans if you use the 2009 Colorado pcm/tcm. I use a special 2008 tcm file for these applications.

Also there are two Slave files in the pcm second processor or flash chip, that need to match portions of code in the engine segments. You cannot use efi, tuner cat, jet dst, or hp tuners to write both Slaves. So you'd need gm software to flash using the vin of a 09 Colorado. I have that software and cable needed to do so. And so do other one poeple. A dealer ship likely won't perform this task for you, but you could ask?

#31 ·
Sorry to hear about your rockers!! Are they available aftermarket or gm? Gm would sell you the hole cab door frame likely?? We don't have that problem in my area there are some sqaure bodies still rolling around with barley any rust? And I've never seen a rusted out Colorado or canyon?

#32 · (Edited)
The replacement panels are from Sherman and you're right, GM doesnt offer anything in the way of repair panels at all. I was really surprised to see how bad it had gotten but it should be repairable so just another thing to do I guess. This will at least offer me an opportunity to get into the rockers are lay down a thick layer of internal frame coating in there too.

I'm sad to hear how different the harnesses are, I guess there's nothing stopping me from just getting an 09 Colorado V8 harness and using that instead. They're only like $300 and should work with the LS2 since it electrically would be the same as an LH8 (both 4th gen LS-based with no VVT or DOD). Does that sound like the best option then? I have a Tech2 clone so I can flash the 09 V8 stock tune as a base and then copy over the fuel/spark tables from the TBSS tune and adjust cylinder volume to 6.0L in HPT.

As for the trans do I have to do anything with the TCM at all? If I leave the TCM from my 3.7L alone and then physically swap in the 4L70e everything should plug into the harness from what I've seen. The PCM/TCM have some sort of verification handshake that goes on but is that based on anything more than the VIN number?

What tranny's can be used in Colly's
beside Colly tranny's. I need to get one
to rebuild for my trk.

24x gen 3, 4l60e/70e 99-08, 4l80e, ma5 5spd manual, 6peed manual t-56, tr6060
58x gen 4, 4l60e/70e 07-12*, 4l80e, 6l80e/90e, 8l90e**, ma5 5spd manual, 6speed manual t56 or tr6060

*When in hummer h3/355, trucks 04-08, won't have backup lights if using a 09-12 trans. Maybe some 2012 and up 4l60e that fits idk what application still uses it?

**8l90e hopefully comming soon:)

#36 ·
So any Gen 4 07-12 4L60E V8 will work ?
Rock shows the tail housing section
is diff.from any other GM trans.WTF

#37 ·
Yeah but you'll need a specific harness and programming for 07-08. Then a different harness and programming for 09-12. And the reverse light issue. Idk what's up with different tailshafts? 2wd or 4wd
