Turning a tire around on rim to even out severe wear.

I bought a set of H3 rims and tires from Craigslist. The rims are great the tires not so much. They have bad wear on the outside of two of them. Is it possible to just turn the tire around so the worn section will be on the inside and even out the wear?:eek7:

I've done that before. My experience with GM's is that they have a tendency to wear the front tires on one side. Rotating them eventually gets you back to the the same tire in the same position getting the same wear.
Since you're pulling these from a different vehicle, the pattern may not be the same for you though. (Previous owner may have worn inside where you wear outside).
Mount the ones with side wear to the rear of yours for a cycle first.

I have to say it-if you have bad wear patterns, nothing you do is obviously gonna regenerate the tread, and if you want to try and see what wear you get on your vehicle, don't be surprised if you have a failure prematurely. I just junked two tires on another vehicle because bad struts caused a weird wear pattern which looked like a tread separation, but it wasn't. I replaced the struts & tires and the vibration the worn tires were causing has vanished. Yes, it's sad you gotta shell-out $ for a new pair or set of 4 but like the old Bell Helmets ad, "how much is your head worth?" Buying used tires and expecting to get use out of them is, to me, like re-using a 'more-personal' item of protection. If you're dirt-poor and it lets you get to a job to buy new ones down the line, OK, maybe, but that's out of necessity. Keep the wheels, sell the used tires on CL or wherever, and buy new. I would never put my wife on the road on used tires.

I agree to a point. But I buy used tires all the time. NEVER have I not gone through and checked the hell out of them...but I have bought only lord knows just how many used tires in my life. As long as yoru not a dumbass and buy a tire with a broken belt, or ten damn plugs in it, then i just don't see a problem with it.

if you move the tire side to side, you change the direction of the tire.

a non directional radial tire can be ran in either direction. That myth is from bias ply tires, they did not like to be turned about.

I work for a dealer and My service director used to always have corvettes, staggered tire fitment and directional tires, in other words, you cannot rotate them. I used to dismount the tires and remount them moving the tires side to side so they would wear evenly. He never had a problem and his tires usually lasted for 24k miles where everyone elses where worn and needed to be replaced at 12k.

^^^ Kevin makes a good point, as many tires are directional.

I think you are asking for trouble if you reverse direction. Some shops refuse to do things like that. The only time I would use a used tire would be to sell a vehicle w/functioning rubber replacing a bald tire. Normally I never let a tire get to that point before replacement, & tend to hold onto my vehicles for many yrs.
