Ok thanks the more I have been looking I keep coming back to the yamaha xs650 and get a hard tail kit and I would like to do a springer front so would the yamaha xs650 be what I should look for or is there a better option and if the xs650 any years to avoid or look for?
Your plans look like a carbon copy of mine. :lmaop:

I believe the electrical ignition started in 80 or 81...right Brad?
Anything from '74-'83 is good. The real early ones '71-'73 had a different frame and other one year only stuff. And like Joe said, '80-'83 is best because of the electronic ignition.

Thanks for the info now I know what years to research it looks like there are plenty out there for sale cheep

So I think once the XS is built I'll be trading my Victory for a bagger. It will be used mainly highway anyway so bags and a fairing are required. I bet with my trade and little down I can get a decent used bagger for the same payment or less. Even better if I can trade even up!

Something like this maybe...

Brad...Is this worth while?

XS650 Permanent Magnet Alternator Conversion

Kinda wanna get rid of the battery. Though I'll keep it for now as it'll keep the build cheaper. (Even if I need to replace it...which I think I have to. :()

Full kit from that guy is like $350. Would be getting real close to my budget. :ugh:

I seriously am thinking about just bobbing the XS and leaving it a soft tail so I can ride it already!!! BUT I really wanna hardtail it.
