Injector Cleaner + Fuel Cap Light = Odd Anomaly

First, This isn't your average "Fuel Cap Light" thread so please don't write this off...

Second, I keep good records of my fuel consumption. I do this via ultraguage as well as hand calculations at the pump. I've used the ultraguage for almost 10k miles now.

Third, I believe this anomaly is unrelated to my recent lift because the first 3 tanks of gas after the lift were mid 19mpg to 21mpg. These were a little less than normal for the amount of city/hwy driving per tank, but I assumed lift would decrease mpg.

So I decided to throw a bottle of Gum Out Fuel System cleaner in a tank of gas. I usually try to do this every 3k miles or so and from all that I've read it can't hurt anything. So I had an almost empty tank, put in the Gum Out, and filled up with regular 87 which is what I always use. About 100 miles or so into this tank my Fuel Cap light came on the dash and P0455 on the ultraguage. I sort of wrote it off as I've seen this light before, but more to come on that. Somewhere around there also my ultraguage average dropped from 19.2 to 19.1 (9k miles average) which is odd because this tank was almost entirely highway miles. After 300 miles or so I filled up, and got 18.4 mpg, for a tank of mostly highway miles. This is about 2-3 mpg less than normal for this type of driving. Next tank was ALL highway and I calculated 18.3!

So I've seen this light and code before, once over the summer, and I believe that to be right around the last time I ran injector cleaner. The other time I had this light very frequently was when my cylinder head failed. At that time I was running injector cleaner a lot before I knew it was the head incase it was an injector causing the misfire. Could injector cleaner be the cause of this light/code/leak?

Also, the truck feels very sluggish, and downshifts at even the slightest hwy grades that it doesn't usually leave OD on.

With winter gasoline on the horizon I can't afford to have this type of thing going on. MPG will only get worse with winter gas.

Manual calculations are so difficult because it is based with the assumption the tank is always filled to the exact same level. Impossible to achieve unless you leave fuel floating in the neck so you can visualize it has not filled any differently.

How is your ultragauge setup? Do you have it set for the smart sensor or did you manually input the tank size into the system. If manual you have to reset it each time you fill up. Which will then put us back in the same loop as with manual calculations.

When you did your lift did you change tires at all?

I don't want to sound mean, but over several tanks of gas you have averaged less than 1mpg difference in fuel. Not to mention only a tenth/mpg over 9,000 miles. Seriously, if you have spot on averages like that for several months I would consider you one lucky guy. I actually get 2-3 tenths variance driving to work every day, according to my ultragauge Average MPG.

In my own opinion, there are too many variables over 300 miles of driving that can affect this. More or less wind. Tire pressure used to be over/under inflated. The aerodynamics of the truck have changed enough to be more restrictive. Different wheel's from stock are outside of the body cutting into the wind. The outside temperature. Longer warmup period every single day over the couple weeks it takes to drain a tank.

I doubt the fuel injection cleaning had anything to do with this.

Don't assume it's the gas cap. There's several conditions that'll throw a P0455.

DTC P0455 - (Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Large Leak Detected)
Diagnostics aids: P0455 diagnostics is checking for a large leak in the EVAP system. Examples of conditions that may contribute to this code setting are: loose or broken fuel cap, disconnected or cracked EVAP lines, cracked charcoal canister, sticking purge or vent solenoids, inaccurate fuel gauge, etc.

Are you throwing a DTC P0442 also?

DTC P0442 - (Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Small Leak Detected
Diagnostics Aids: P0442 diagnostics is checking of a 0.5mm (0.020 in) sized hole in the EVAP system. Examples of conditions which may cause this type leak include: cracked EVAP lines, cracked charcoal canister, a cut of dirty fuel cap seal, debris on the purge or vent solenoid, internal seals, loose fuel lines, etc.

  1. Inspect the green sealing ring on fuel cap for debris or cuts which could cause a small EVAP leak.

  2. Inspect filler neck sealing surface for gouges or dents produced by accidental or fuel nozzle damage.

Here's a how-to that may help you:

There was a TSB released in August 2007 for fuel caps (attached).

I agree that it's not the gas cap. I may look into that how to because I don't think this is just going to disappear on it's own like it has in the past...

So we don't think injector cleaner has anything I do with this? I find it odd this light/code always come up while or right after I run it.

So my gas mileage kept getting worse with every tank of gas and ultra gauge went down to 19.0

The issue as it turns out was completely unrelated to all of what was posted above. The only place I ever use my e-brake is my grandparents house because their driveway is a steep hill. Tried to put it on the other day and when I pushed in the peddle it felt like no resistance. Parked the truck and checked things over. Turns out it was all kinds I fucked up. Cable pulled through the clippy thing on the driver side rear wheel and was laying on my axle causing resistance. Fixed that all up and the truck drives 10x better. Ultragauge returned to 19.1 on my drive back I school. I know it's early to tell if it will actually go back to normal but I think it will just based on how bogged down the truck was before.

As a side not my fuel cap light has disparate and I will reframe from running injector cleaner as I'm convinced that's the cause.
