rear differential fill plug

on our 2006 chevy colorado that we bought last summer someone was nice enough to have drilled and tapped a hole into the rear diff fill plug and threaded a bolt into it. while this does seem to work there is some oil that seeps and I dont think the bolt stays really well and I want to fix it back to how it should be.

My thoughts are to put it on the 2 post lift and either:

A: get a hammer and punch and see if I can knock it to the left untill it threads out

B: get the welder out and just thread the bolt in and weld it to the plug then use either it big breaker bar or a impact on the bolt to get it to unthread.

c: any other ideas you guys come up with

after I get it out I want to replace it with something. either just another 3/8 plug or if there is a upgrade or something better then that, the only issue is that I dont know what thread the plug is. are all 10 bolt chevy rear ends the same??

I like the idea of getting a diff cover with the drain and fill plugs however I know for a fact that the dealer I bought it from had just put new axle seals and changed the gear oil so I dont want to waste it right now unless a cover isnt that much money. either way the bolt has seeping oil so it needs fixed so thats all I am worried about right now.

thanks for the help.

Clean up the OEM fill point, take a bolt and cut the head off and weld the bolt head to the fill point and done.

Once you get it out, make sure you put some anti-seize on it for ease of removal next time

the previous owner did drill and tap a hole in the differential plug. the bolt that is in it is not siezed and I can get it out but oil is seeping out of it and it just bothers me. thats the only reason I want to fix it.

thats a good Idea once I get the old plug out ill see what condition its all in.

If you can back it out, can't a rubber or fiber washer be added to stop the leak?

Teflon tape would seal it up. If it were mine I'd just replace it with a fresh fill plug.

I had a BUNG welded in prior to painting the cover, but a Teflon washer should work in your case!
