Rear Disc Brake Conversions?

I was wondering if anyone has tried to upgrade our rear disc drum brakes to disc brakes using stock GM parts from a different vehicle? I know SSBC makes a complete conversion kit but, the price tag is $1121.99. I was looking around and couldn't figure out if any colorado/canyons came with stock rear disc brakes? I know a company called Evolution(I just heard of them too) makes OEM replacement 12.99in (stock sized) drilled and slotted rotors. I would be cool with using our the front GM OEM dual piston calipers on the back. That was kind of a rambling post so I'll make it more clear.

1. Did GM make any colorado/caynons with OEM rear disc brakes?
2. If so has anyone tried to weld up a pair of custom brackets to mount the OE GM calipers to the rear axles?

Thanks Guys,
LATE

the stock diff that u guys get on your trucks over there are differant to the ones we get. i just got a new diff for mine, out of another GM vehicle. it is 5 lug but runs disk rear.

it looks really similar to the rear end u guys get stock, so i have been wondering if there is a possibility that everything could swap out onto your rear ends. anyone got a good few pics of their stock diff etc???

This is way more common on import trucks. The thing to find first is a rotor that fits the 355 axle. Once thats done the caliper and mounts are easy. Most street rod parts places and dirt car parts places sell universal axle mounts for GM calipers. If theres an inline proportioning valve that can be eliminated and you can use an inline adjustable valve and dial it in to what you need.

Someone was talking about some Wilwood rotors with custom drilled tophats.

In order to use the SSBC kit you have to also install the front kit too. If not there is an issue with the ABS and proportioning valve or master cylinder.

wait so i was looking at the h3 cause it came in the shop once i took some photos and everything looks the same. has someone tried this will it work? i was thinking about doing this???

I think the H3 uses the AAM 860 axle, we have the AAM 800. Also I'm pretty sure the H3 does not use leaf springs in the rear either. So if it would fit, there would be some fab work cutting and welding involved; not to say you guys are not up for that.

yeah the h3 does use leafs in the rear. and the axles are just longer...i dont see why they wouldnt fit the backing plate and mounting are all 4"X4" square at the end of the axle tubing. if no one has tried it im down to give it a shot. i calculated it out its gonna run me about 300$.......disk brakes in the rear...sweet

yeah it kinda does....but im afraid to try it and then im stuck with all the h3 parts....i think i can return them. just looked around and lot of the parts are dealership only parts. if i can return it i think its worth a try

Planning and plenty of measuring with get r dun

everything seems alike in the rear. even when i took the wheels off and the rotors the axle hub looks the same. the only thing i didnt get to look at was the caliper mounting bracket to the axle houseing.....not sure of that at all. but if it were to happen. the parts would be:
calipers
pads
rotors
ebrake hardware/shoes
and perhaps the metering valve cause drums slow down the brake fluid to keep the drums from locking up. but im sure a quick phone call to ssbc they can tell us whether the ssbc kit comes with a new metering valve.

Ok, I made a list to help figure out what would need to be ordered. The parts are OEM 2007 Hummer H3 3.7L I-5 rear brake system parts from RockAuto[dot]com. The Calipers will be more expensive than if we were to buy them for an H3 because we won't have a core to return back to them. They are single piston calipers with OE mounting brackets. The OE mounting brackets are needed because they are the bottom portion of the caliper setup. The rotors are from autopartswearhouse[dot]com. If I missed anything please help add to the list, or if you contest anything I have up there now, that is the point posting the list :).

One forsure one would have to fabricated custom mounting brakets that will attach to the OE mounting bracket and both will be bolted to the axles; this will require some skill with a TIG welder. The OE parking brake setup may need to be modified and extra parts may need to be fabricated to get it to fit correctly. Also, I would suggest finding a website that will sell you individual caliper bolts because this website only sells a set of 8 for 58.99 and I bet you could find a better price if you really looked online. If someone finds a better price on OE caliper bolts for a chevy colorado please post up.

Why not find a wrecked H3 and pull the rear off of it?

Somebody did it a couple tears ago on cfans and found the rear was too wide to fit under a lowered 355. I don't remember if he looked at swapping parts over though.

#22 ·
It seems like that would be very doable Dan

Front or Fender Impacted H3's. DITTO :)

ps. I did a little looking around at AutoZone today because I needed some new OE brake shoes and I checked the price on OE H3 rear brake pads and they were only 29.99 for the set. And the rotors were much cheaper as well but, I forgot the exact price on them. I'll stop by tommorow after work and get a print out on OE H3 rotors and the different types of OE pads they have (metallic, ceramic and semi-metallic premium) and post what I find.

ok just want to see if im following correctly. the parts list that you stated is the parts you need to buy and put on our rear end? and if so that doesnt seem that bad at all. and also does any one know how much it costs to do the shorting of the rear to tuck?
