Sliding Rag Tops

I'm thinking about installing a sliding rag top. I've had one on a truck before, but it was on it when I bought the truck, and it wasn't installed correctly. It leaked constantly.

I have talked to several companies that make them, and they say that, if installed correctly, they only leak if you wash the vehicle with a pressure washer, which I don't do anyways.

Anyone ever have a vehicle with a rag top? Is it reasonable to think that if it is installed properly it won't leak, or is that just bullshit from the companies trying to sell tops?

Yeah yeah I know I had a riced out scion but this is what I traded in on my first Colorado
But it had the big sliding rag from street beat I got it for a slammed 4 door blazer I had but sold the blazer before I put it in so I put it in the xb

As for noise it was not as loud as a jeep soft top but it would leak if you sprayed it with the hose from the side so when I washed the roof I held the hose above and sprayed down and it held snow great it had had at least a foot of wet snow and was go to go

This was when I was putting it in the car was only 3 weeks old

If you don't want water getting in when your driving you need one of these sun roof visors but it made mine make more noise going down the road but it stopped the rain from pushing the front at 60 mph

i have asked around town a few times bout aftermarket sunroofs/ragtops
we have 9 "customs" shops...4 will install a "normal" sunroof(pop up or electric), only 2 will warranty them..other 2 will warranty them unless you have system..they say the vibrations from the subs will make it leak and use that as there reasoning of why they dont warranty it
1 of those shops has notifyed me they will install a ragtop from the company they approve of/deal with, same thing, warranty it unless i put a system in it..
so, take that as it may help..
any one else heard anything else like this?

I only had it leak 3 times
-First was 2 days after I put it on and was driving in pouring rain doing around 60 and the front seal was weeping just a little bit
-Second was the first time I washed it and sprayed the side to see if it leaked but still was not bad
-Third was when I parked on a steep hill with the front of the car up hill and it was pouring rain and it was running in the side when it hit the back. That was the worst but still not to bad just never parked on a hill like that again in the rain

All this was over 2 years

I like the sounds of it, but is the roof of a reg cab really long enough to be practical? Just wondering, Crew cab I would be all for it, not too sure on reg though. I'm sure it'll look cool though, granted, I would just full convertible it if it were me. But it is your truck and not mine. Am interested to see what one would look like if you are to go with your idea!

The standard kit for a reg cab truck only opens about 15 inches, but I think I can fit a much bigger one in. They make custom sizes, so I'm gonna drop the headliner and measure how much room I have. I want to replace pretty much the entire roof with the rag top.

Their standard reg cab unit is 35 x 20... just measuring on the outside, I think I can fit a 38 x 30 or so with no problems... just have to see whats in the way on the inside.

I have seen a bunch of tacos, rangers and s10s all standard cab with rags and the looked good and opened just as much as a glass top would in a standard cab

I had one in my old 4 door civic, what I found that stopped just about all leaks was I bought some foam rubber weather seal, it was the kind that that was half round, not square (if that makes sense). I ran it all the way from one back corner around the front to the other back corner and when you tightened the roof down, it would seal up just about everything even a light pressure hose from the side.

For what it's worth, I absoutely loved my rag top and if my current civic didn't already have a factory power sunroof already in it, it would have a rag top in it too.

Hey man great idea, I wanted to install one in the rado but the woman doesnt like the looks of it.

Anyways, ive installed 3 of them in air cooled Volkswagens, two bugs and a type 3 notchback.

The two bugs were original sliding rags from old donors and had the tops reupholstered, never had an issue with leaking or wind noise.

The notchback on the other hand was an aftermarket slider and it was a piece of shit, from the rails to the rag top. It seemed like the company didnt make the rag hang over enough. It leaked and wind noise was horrendous.

Im sorry i cant tell you the brand to stay away from because my customer brought it to me to install.

IMO, i would lay a bead of caulking around the cut opening and then istall the the inner and outer rails as a preventative measure from leaking.

I hope you install one though cause they look fuckin wicked.

This would be SICK on a lowered truck....I cant picture it on a lifted though.

I had a rag on my old S-10 and it leaked like crazy. I know it was installed properly, but I think the tops are hit or miss. Since they are all custom and hand-made you never really know what you're going to get sadly...

That being said, I've heard the Electric tops are awesome and I have been contemplating one.
