Ebay'd a 15437 Volant CAI for $180
Not crazy about the oiled filter that comes with it b/c I've seen them mess with sensors
Had to trim the main tube a bit to make it fit, otherwise no problem
Clean my MAF/IAT sensor
Sounds awesome
Nice power gain
...until
the next power cycle I get a CEL
Notable power drop and hesitation at WOT
Go to O'reillys and pull the P101 code
Push through it for a couple of days for daily drive to work
Get 17mpg as opposed to my stock intake getting +20mpg :th_crazy:
Replaced my stock intake and the CEL hasn't happened yet

Probably going tomorrow to a local tuner to see if I can get a proper tune and maybe remove the 100mph governor

Should I install the Volant before I go to the tuner or just take it with me?

Thoughts, suggestions, previous experiences

I'm probably going to at least take it and my tools with me when I go to tune it

Not a problem to install now that it's trimmed properly

Any suggestions for what to tell the tuner?
All I know is that I want it to accept the new CAI and remove governor
I know tunes gain power but idk anything about the specifics
Don't want too much power and loose mileage, and vise versa

I would put it back on and check the intake, fittings and vacuum lines for cracks / leaks. Also Pull the negative battery cable for at least 30 min. before taking it for a test drive.

I would put the intake on the truck when you go to get the tune, just let the tuner the issue your having. Bring your stock intake and tools with you just incase.

I checked pretty well for leaks, all short of lighting a cigar and watching for vacuum holes.
I pulled the battery to clear the CEL, but it came back, twice.

I might put the CAI on tomorrow morning before I head to the tuner.
I just hope they're open on Good Friday.

Update: Replaced stock intake and went from 17mpg up to 22mpg
Tuners weren't available all weekend.
Called them this morning and the guy says that the only thing he can get for the 2.9l is a jet PCM chip, probably something like:
2007-2008 Chevrolet Colorado Performance Module and Chip Jet Performance, Jet Performance Stage 1, 49-state legal - no CA shipments, Direct fit

He says he doesn't think it'll fix my CEL though.
I'm gonna take it to them tomorrow to see if maybe I did something wrong hooking up the CAI and ask him if maybe I need a better MAF/IAT like:
http://www.carparts.com/details/Che...evroletcolorado20072011jetperformancej20691431&gclid=CLjhoJnYqbYCFQuCnQoduWEAzQ

I'm really disappointed though. I was thinking these guys would be able to actually TUNE my truck rather than just put in a dinky little chip.
I want it to run right and haul ass without the top end limit.
I guess I can look into one of those diablo tuners like:
DiabloSport® DBLI1000 - Chevy Colorado 2008-2011 inTune Programmer

I'm open to suggestions.

Decided to put the CAI back on today before going to tune shop tomorrow.
Cleaned the MAF/IAT again and tried to make sure it was sealed up better.
Ran great for 3 engine cycles.
Went to O'reillys to get the codes read and I got the same P0101 along with a new code:
P0171 System too lean (bank 1)
I'm thinking it's either because the impedance of the stock MAF is too low or maybe because of the oil in the new filter.
I think the impedance is too low due to the P0171, but the P0101 makes me wonder if it's the oiled filter, especially since it waited until a 3rd engine cycle to come up.

I don't know if I should get a high flow MAF or a different filter

TL;DR Help, I am confus

Maybe the guys at the shop I'm going to tomorrow will have a smoke machine or something to check for leaks and/or offer suggestions to fix it since they don't have a decent tuner. If this doesn't work out then I have the name of a tuner in Beaumont, but he usually does racecars so idk if he'd help me.

Just got back from Custom Performance.
I pretty much paid a guy $20 to tighten the MAF screws and tell me that it's fucked. I was waiting for him to strip the screws out and owe me a new CAI. He cleared the codes for me, and the engine stumbled trying to get up to highway speed on my way home. I decided to go home and put some RTV under the gasket to try and seal it up.
I'm gonna call Volant tomorrow and see if they have some kind of adapter plate. If not then I may just make one myself.

Update:
I've done pretty much everything I can think of.
Everything is airtight.
I sprayed MAF cleaner on the whole thing and no change in idle.
I even put RTV around the MAF to make sure it's airtight and bigger screws to suck it down on there more.
I'm just gonna put the stock intake back on there and maybe I'll do the cheap resonator delete.
Either that or just tape up part of the intake, and hope it stops running lean.
The only other thing I can think of is to replace the O2 sensor, and I'd rather not spend more money on this project unless I know it's gonna work.

Okay so I finally found my usb cord lol
here's what I got:
There's my intake.
I slapped some RTV on the MAF to make sure it's airtight.
Then I taped about 30% or the filter face to lower the amount of intake air.
It sounds about the same to me tho. I checked it before and after with the stethoscope, and idk if there's something wrong with my throttle body or I just have sticktion in the bushings, but every so often it sounds like a rotary telephone rewinding. Although, this is probably a normal function to keep the loop regulated.
I just taped it about an hour ago and only made two trips since then.
Still got a great noise. Still got a pretty good bit of power from stock.
Hopefully this will do the trick.
Will update later.

Hold up a minute.....

He put a CAI for a 3.7L on a 2.9L. Pretty sure the MAF housings are different sizes, so yeah, it will throw codes and the engine will run like crap.

It's sitting in my shop in a box.
The Wolf! told me that it needs to be tuned to work.
Sure wish Volant would have said that.
I got an evo so I kinda dropped this for a while.
If I ever do decide to come back to this I'll get a junkyard air box and cut the MAF portion of the intake out and fit it to the volant box and tube.
Really wish this worked tho b/c the few miles I get before it starts running crappy are really nice.
Sounds better and actually makes a little bit more power. Prolly just 5-10hp but w/e.

Pics or it didn't happen.
I'm okay with wasting tomorrow doing this if it works.
I've only tried putting mine in properly. Didn't make much sense to put it in backwards but hey, I might just give it a shot if NASCAR doesn't take up most of my Sunday afternoon.

#33 ·
Oh wow, I read that wrong.
I thought you meant that you put it in right then someone suggested putting it in backwards to fix the problem lol.
Disregard me.
Yes I checked and double checked mine on quite a few occasions, making sure to be very careful with the MAF while paying attention to orientation and looking for little holes that may cause a leak.

Thread revival

So any luck on fixing the issue?

I'm having the same problem. I have an '04 3.5L so a little different. Basically what I had was the MAF sensor didn't fit in the port properly. Did a little research and it looks like (even though its the right part #) the hole is meant for the 07+ MAF sensor port, which is only round. On the 04 setup, it has tabs on it that square it off (see pics).

I ended up trimming them off. It ran fine for a while until I decided to fix the vibration from the intake tube hitting the box. There is another thread about fixing it, all i did was move the filter so that the rubber housing on the filter fit more firmly against the hole in the box.

I had a Volant intake for my 2007 2.9 and the thing did not fit well at all. So I ended up making a hybrid Volant/K&N intake by replacing the Volant intake tube with a K&N tube I had laying around. I did that because I did not like the way Volant engineered the MAF to be installed in the Volant tube plus it was a much better fit. I don't remember the exact problem I had with the Volant intake but I think it had to do with the alignment of all the components sucking.

With the hybrid setup I had no CEL's - ever - and I used that for my runs at Bonneville a few years ago. Now I'm using the stock intake with a couple 2" diameter holes drilled in the air box lid and an AFE dry filter. Works and sounds good!

#36 ·
That is exactly what I was thinking of doing. I just don't have an extra k&n tube laying around.

I think my main problem is the manufactured port for the MAF. It's round, my MAF is somewhat square = that's a problem. Don't think Volant can help with that.

Like you said, the fit is not good. It's what I call a semi-custom fit, but when it runs right, it sounds good and feels like the operation is a little smoother.

On my 06 with the 3.5 I had the K&N fipk on it no issues.

Bought the volant intake and all of a sudden nothing but issues.

End is the day it was the power core filter. Got rid of it and installed the volant oiled filter all is well now and I am very happy with the volant intake. And the ram air was a nice add on.
