A few years back I was pretty active on the cFans forum and at the time viewed 355nation as the red-headed step child. Well, in enters life and all that business while the whole time I drove my '06 Colly, Black Betty, with impunity. If I pointed it down the highway, it went. If I pointed up snowy slopes, it went. If I pointed it towards a light pole, it attempted to demolish it with impunity (yea, that wasn't so smart). I had been good to thet truck, it had been good to me.
Fast forward to New Years. What a great weekend in the Alaskan interior. Sleds (snow machines for Lower 48ers), massive bonfire, fireworks that started shooting sideways (turns out mortars melt snow pack... who would have figured!), and food. GOOD food. At some point reality set in, and I had to head home, so I head back to my trusty steed, ~10miles away in the parking area for the cabin. It was a cold ride, about -30deg F out. BUT that's what men do, defy common sense & all brave the elements!
I unlock the doors, go to start, & nada. My beloved Black Betty, with only 39k miles on it -- how could it be?! Damn, what to do? Long story short (it's documented on here), I ended up spending another night in the Alaskan interior and rented a 150k BTU heater & tarp (15' x 40' is the perfect size!) and waited for my beloved Colly to start. I felt a lot like my license plates say. UIDIOT. But while waiting for my truck to thaw, we watched 2 other trucks decide not to start... so I didn't feel as bad.
After driving home, I fought my Colly for another 1.5-2 months until the issue was finally fixed (replaced 3 coil packs). I had been to the dealer multiple times and was getting fed up with a poorly performing truck. I troubleshot for days, for weeks! I became reacquainted with cFans, and to my surprise, the emergence of 355nation over cFans! With my new troubleshooting knowledge, Black Betty got all new fluids around, throttle body cleaning, seafoaming, etc... and it still ran rough.
This is when I started thinking about ordering a new truck. I've got new property to build a cabin on and there's a fireroad out there that's passable only in the summer; I will need to be trucking in all my own materials and well, the toys for the Alaskan wilderness are starting to accumulate. Sleds, ATVs, UTVs, you name it -- they're all on the wishlist. I had planned on upgrading my Colly with air bags to help with the squat, electric trailer brake controller, etc.. I was going to be towing at the 4000lb limit. However, with the consistent engine problems I was now wondering if I should get a new vehicle & treat it right from the beginning; I bought my Colly used and while it looked like it was treated well prior to me getting it, who could really know? If I got a new truck, I could pull the 5-6klb material loads to the cabin allowing for fewer trips.
So on one fateful morning in the first week of February, I walk into the dealer, ready to buy a truck. I'm a picky SOB, and I know what I want... ANOTHER COLORADO! Except this time with the V8 and the heated seats (noone likes cold buns). They tried to get me to buy a Silverado off the lot, but I resisted. I wanted a V8 Colly. But they didn't have any! No problem, I can order one. But you're pay more for a V8 Colly than a similar Colorado and you can tow even more. I don't care, I want a Colorado! Why? I can park it in my garage. It's easier to drive than a wider full-size on fire roads. I have parts on my existing Colly that I can transfer over. And they have V8s now, duh.
I walked out later with a paper and a little number on it -- the order number! 2012 2LT 4x4 with V8 & 4.10s. 5500GVW front, heated seats, locking tailgate (why do dealers not order these -- it's less than $25!). I can't wait!
A few weeks passed, and on March 2nd, 2012 I became the proud father of the Silver Bullet. On March 8th, it left Shreveport and started it's journey to Alaska. I'm glad that it's getting the chance to see the Lower 48 (albeit through the slots of a railcar); it's been through Little Rock, St. Louis, Des Moines, Cheyenne, Nampa, & currently sitting in Vancouver, OR. Perhaps one of you have been able to say hello -- I'm sure it wished to be on the road with the other Colorados it's seen.
The Silver Bullet is supposed to be in Seattle/Tacoma tomorrow -- from there it'll get to go on it's first cruise; hopefully it gets pampered and has great accomodations. The cruise length is about 4 days with the next departures the 23rd, 28th, or 30th, so hopefully owner & truck will get to meet within the next 1-2 weeks!
It'll be tough saying goodbye to Black Betty, but she's served me well. I'll be taking a few days to transfer a few parts over from Black Betty to The Silver Bullet before I put Black Betty up for sale; she's run very well over the past month, so I'm confident I won't be selling anyone a lemon.
I'm sure one, or two, or all of you will give me one of those it's no good without pictures emoticons, so I'll do my best & upload the life & times of Black Betty and my new adventures with The Silver Bullet. I've been excited about the new truck and I've been buying parts left & right for the new ride... so let the Build thread begin!**
I'm guessing my truck will miss the first sailing, so I'm betting on an April 1st delivery. Oh crap, what a horrible day to pick! Oh well, I'll take it anyday! Now, if the dealer rolls around a Tacoma on that day, I'm going to have to put the hurt on someone...
