Why? Your aluminum is lighter than the steel. Imo I wouldn't want a carrier bearing. If you insist check car-parts.com gonna be the cheapest option. Ext and crew cab are the same wheelbase. All z71 to my knowledge came with one piece aluminum driveshafts.

 

I guess the Z85 2WD 5.3 all have aluminum 1-piece shafts too. Cause thats what my 2011 has.

 

It may not be as easy as just changing it out.I could be wrong here so someone correct me if so.The cross member on trucks with 1 piece shafts are shaped with a indentation on top to clear the shaft.The cross members on trucks with 2 piece shafts are flat on top to allow the carrier bearing a area to bolt down.


On a side note:Are you guys sure all 1 piece shafts are alumium,i could has swore mine was steel.

 

I just crawled under mine with a magnet...definitely one piece and aluminum. With torsion bars.

 

I really dont think gm had any real discretion when they chose drive shaft went in what truck

My 09 Z71 Crew Cab is a one piece steel. I would much rather have an aluminum shaft.

 

I could be wrong, and if so someone will correct me, but it appears that if you have torsion bars you have a one piece drive shaft.

 

One piece shaft here as well and mine is steel 2007 ext cab z71.

 

My 06 crew z71 4x4 had 1 piece , my 05 crew z85 2wd had a 1piece , my 2011 crew z71 v8 4x4 has a 1 piece

 

Okay, that rules out my theory. Maybe just the ZQ8s have two piece? I'm getting confused!!!:th_crazy:

Not to hijack the thread, but I see quite a few guys have the Z85 5.3. I thought it was an unusual combo when I ordered mine. I don't think the Z85 was available with the 5.3 for 2012.

 

I think you are correct on the 2012 models. My 2011 is like yours. I think it is an unusual combo too. What sort of driveshaft do you have?

 

I have the one piece aluminum driveshaft.

 

i have a 2 piece steel if you want to swap, (pending measurements are close)

 

You would be more efficient with less weight and less rotating mass. Not to mention less failure points .

 

I was looking more into performance... Which one will hold more hp or higher speeds

 

I want to make a 2 piece aluminum. get a 1 piece aluminum and and use it to make
my new one. we have shops that can cut it in half and make 2 new ones.
