I want to get one or some sort of other useful tool to cut up some exhaust. with an angle grinder can you just "cut" or can you also use it to grind flat surfaces for example smoothing welds, or sanding down rust spots?

Im just getting started working with metal and need 1 or 2 really multi-usefull tools.
Sounds like you need and reciprcating saw and angle grinder. Angle grinder with a cutting disc will cut, but a reciprocating saw works better.
Yep what rich said 4-1/2" grinder with cut off disk is great untill you don't have room to get to the other side of something like exhaust still on a car ! A reciprocating saw (saws all) is great for cutting almost anything untill you get into real thick metal then plasma or band saw or 6" grinder

But yes a grinder will work as a cutting tool with cutting disks and as a grinder to grind/polish welds and you can also get wire cups to put on them for rust removal

One thing to pay attention to is the type of disk your getting some grinders out the boz you can't use the flat disks you have to get the ones with the depressed centers , so when in dought get depressed centers also make sure they are for the type of material you plan to cut or grind

For grinding welds and other things 60 grit flap disks are amazing and last many times longer than a regular grinding disk but don't buy cheep disks because they ware out faster or break spend the extra $1 per to get something that will last longer than the cheepos that cost you more in the long run because you use more of them to do the same job

A tool board to hold my tools in the bucket and a collapsible hawkbill knife.

Yeah it took me a wile to decide on that model , I like most all dewalt tools but even though that one cost more than there other 4.5" it's got a few more rugged features and the deal sealer was the switch it has a paddle style that you squeeze and a lock to lock it on but touch the switch and it unlocks or say like if you dropped it but the cheaper one has a slide on/off switch so if you drop it its not shutting off IMO not very safe

Yeah I love my DeWalt 4.5" grinder/cutter......its tough as nails

I bought 3 Blue-point hose pinch off pliers, 1 in each size PHP1, PHP2, and PHP3
They look like this

talk about an awesome tool those things actually break more loose than i would think they would. i once tore down a bmw v12 engine with this but only to the long block, basically it pulled all the fuel components and valve cover bolts even broke the front cover bolts loose. i was thoroughly impressed. and that my friend bought it for $8 on sale was even a bigger plus

Yup his an the big battery is alot of power for a cordless tool, then you can break loose the bolt using your hand power then use the tool to unscrew it real quik!! One of the best tool I bought

Door Trim Removal Tool, I like em. Saves your trim peices from being damaged by using screw drivers etc...
