Z71 Crew w/H3 rims seeks your experience

My Suspension Maxx TB keys and shackles just got here, and I hope to get 2" lift from these. My truck was level from the gitgo. I got some H3 rims. According to offset calcs, I'll pick up only 1mm to the inside and 11 mm to the outside. But that's the wheel. An 11" wide tire (such as the 33/10.5/R15 Toyo Open Country MT=32.8x10.9 which I could put on my stock 15x7's) is only going to be about a quarter inch wider to both the inside and out than my stock Generals.

Anyway, bottom line is, if you run a Z71 Crew with H3 rims and the SuspMaxx keys/shackles right now, as I soon will be hopefully, and you are doing it with no rubbing issues or problems offroad, I'm very interested in what tires you run so please let me know. My ideal is a 285/75/R16, but I don't find anyone running that without a body lift or serious suspension lift.

I'm doing theses changes to gain offroad performance, but need to drive highway too. I'm looking for something like those Toyos O.C. AT's, BFG AT KO, Wrangler Duratrac, maybe the Nittos. Not a mudder per se or hard core crawler, but with good side puncture resistance.

I gave up on the H3 torsion bars I'd thought of installing. After studying diagrams of the chassis, it looks like the H3 bars must be about 5-6" longer. So, H3 Z71 guys, what are you running offroad? I may add some airbags later and get 'er tuned for the mods.

I have heard from a guy on cfans that he had a tb crank and 32's on his h3 wheels and he said they were very close to the sway bar but they didnt rub. I have some H3 wheels and i am saving up for tires right now (wrangler Duratracs). i wanted 285's too but there is no way they will fit so im am just going to go with the 265/75

Thanks for the thread. They've got offset and backspacing mixed up. According to this Wheel Offset Calculator - Morfed.net the H3 rim only comes to the inside 1 mm more than the 15x7 stockers I have. They stick out an additional 11mm. I've heard good things about the Duratrac and am considering it myself.
What with the site sponsor being SMaxx and all, I was hoping to hear from some guys running H3's on 355 Crew Z71 2008 (w/SM keys and shackles) who had tires that weren't rubbing at all. I'm getting lifted for offroad. Call me picky, but I prefer to keep my tires off the parts not designed for that contact. I'm sure there are guys out there, I just haven't been able to find them. I'm considering keeping my stockers on because of the Toyo Open Country MT. Their 33x 10.5 nominal size is spec'd at 32.8 x 10.9. As a serious tire shopper, those are very intriguing dimensions.

I had H3s on my keyed and shackled z71 with a 265/75r16. I never took any measurements but it didn't look like a 285 would fit.

Hey nmatcek in San Antone Lone Star State, thanks for the input. If you can remember, what tires did you have in the 265? I've got the spec sheets for 6-7 of the companies I'm real interested in.
1. Or, do you remember the actual size? Couldn't locate your album, but your avatar pic looks to be the front end of a trail worthy machine.
2. Did you like your tires pretty well? What are you running now? I'm liking some Toyo Open Country MT's.
3. Did you know that the 265/75/R16 is 31.8x10.8 and the 285/70/R16 is only 32x11.1? Not a big difference it would SEEEEEmmm, unless it's the difference between rubbing something or not.
4.Talk to me brother, for I am lost in the wonderful world of wheels and wubber. mean, SM says you can get a 32" tire on, but what if it's a Toyo OC MT 285/70/R16???
5. Would it be worth trying a 32.8x10.9 on my stockers? I mean, did the width seem to be more of an issue than O.D? Or more or less same problem. Thank you!

just a little bit of the info i have---

im pretty sure the 33's your talking about wont fit without major lifting (from info i have got on this site, not personal experience)
od is usually the problem
originally i was looking for 285/70 but they are rare- i think the only ones i found were the toyo mt's your are talking about.

for my truck i am just going to sacrifice the little bit of width from 285's down to 265's for the peace of mind that they wont rub...they are still plenty big

Hi WSU, and thanks for the info. I'm with you on the rubbing issue. I know that if it's barely taking the paint off at full crank that it ain't much, but I don't want any. So, I'm going to do the same thing as you. That is, get something that's plenty big enough but doesn't rub. My stock tires are 30.6x10.5, so I figure that with a 2" lift with keys/shackles, I should be able to run a 32.6x10.5. Then I wonder if I can get away with a 32.7x10.9 (toyo oc mt 33x10.5R15) on my stocker rims. In theory, should fit with 2" lift. That would be an ideal size. I guess I'll load up an H3 rim in a few weeks and see if I can find a tire place that will let me try a couple of options. Let me know what tires you end up with. I'll do the same here in a few weeks. Which tires are the main contenders for your truck? See, on the other site there's a fellow reporting no rub on a 33x10.5 BFG AT on a truck like mine (Z71 4wd with keys/TB crank/shackles). There are quite a few guys who don't mine a mild amount of rubbing, and they are going 285's. Are you running H3 rims? Hey, thanks a lot for posting your take on the situation.

I am going to buy the duratracs no matter what because i dont want mud terrain and most AT's arent very aggressive(accept for the duratracs), and they have sidebiters.

if you say that there is a guy running 33's with no prob then that should overide whatever i say as i dont firsthand know

the only thing i have heard is of some people putting on 33's and rubbing a shit-ton...and you seem very adamant about not rubbing at all

#12 ·
Well, WSU, the 33's in question were only 10.5 wide, the BFG AT's. If you add an "i" to this and switch a letter around you'd get "BIG FAT." Exactly what these tires ain't. This is the part where I realize that I DO have some "vanity" issues about my truck's appearance. They look skimpyskinny to me. All I say is that I've seen a post claiming these babies didn't rub, and you are correct, I am adamant about no rubbing. It sounds to me like I need to go see some Duratracs because the only reason I'd consider the Toyo MT's is because (it is once again "claimed" that) they are quiet and are a decent all-season tire. I don't even do mud if I can avoid it. The steady "wompwompwomp" that is music to the ears of some? Just not my deal either.

my personal opinion is that you need to go higher than 2inches to not make them reb. i had 33 1050's on a 3in crank and i had to remove my mud flaps cause the corners rubbed now i'm going to be turning 33-1150's on some 17in soft 8's and i def wont rub once i do my lift here in the next week or two

#16 ·
WSU, yes we want the same. Keep us posted on what you get and how it works out for you.

xkmacx86: Thanks a lot for your experience here, very helpful. I looked through your album. Nice truck. It looks like you were running some BFG 33x10.5R15's. Were they AT, KM2? I never had any mud flaps on my Canyon Z71 4wd, so I might be okay with those tires. Aside from the mud flap issue, how did you like them on jeep trails and such? They look like good tires, but did you have issues of bottoming out in your wells or anything? But then again, how much lift were you sporting in these photos? I'd like to know which lift you are going for, 3"PAC BL, Skyjacker 4" susp lift?

aight they are 33 1050 15's at the pinacle of my lifting career to date i was at 4in of crank and a 1in body lift no rubbing except the sway at full lock, no big deal. i didn't like the look of the narrow tires and narrow track width so i picked up some wheel spacers and i rubbed on the body mount and the flare. shortly i will be doing lift spindles on top of my crank and i now have a 2in body lift

Dunno, maybe I could get used to tiny sway rub. Seems like a lotta guys have. Know what you mean about the narrow track look. Maybe the Toyo O.C. LT 285/70RT16 on the H3 rim is still the way to go for me at 32x11.1. According to my calcs, the H3 rims would bring this nice tire inside about 5/16ths more than my stock Generals, and it would stick out only about that same amount. Height-wise, I could get what I need just by cranking, but I'm going with the SM keys. Thing is, although there are other benefits, I'm only gaining about 3/4 clearance after all this way. So, I'm fight for every 16th I can squeeze out of it for now. Thanks for helping me think this through. I wish trying on tires was like going to Big 5 and just trying a bunch of shoes on. Anybody got a bro in the tire biz around Ventura County?

it's all about the wheel backspacing honestly. with the h3 wheels i think you could run a 285/70r16 and be pretty good but it would more than likely rub the sway bar at full lock but you could always use a 1/4" spacer and that would solve that more than likely.
no expirence with h3's just telling you what i've learned with my 33x11.5 on 5.5" backspacing wheels

Hey filli, yeah, there is much in what you say. One cool thing about the H3 rim is that it doesn't bring the tire in very much at all (1mm) so if one goes wider, say to an 11.5 from a 10.5 stock General, it appears that the H3 rim pretty much splits the difference in and out. That is, the tire would come and and go out an extra 1/2" give or take a mm. I need to look into spacers and how they hold up to moderate trail thrashing. I'm going to go check out your truck again...one of the first I noticed here as being in the direction I want to go.

I sure wish someone would just say "Yeah, I've got a mild lift and run the Toyo OCM/T 33x10.5 on my stockers no problem!" But maybe that wouldn't be much fun maybe.

Yes, good point, thanks for reminding me...Bahamatodd....he has the red Z71. And he says no issues and just got a new set. I think his AT's spec out at 32.7x10.6 and he's on stock 15x7's. I need to get in touch with him. He might have a pretty good idea if the Toyo MT in that size (just slightly bigger @ 32.8x10.9) would fit.

BTW bradtw191, I can't recall any tires right around that size for a 16" rim. They mostly jump up to significantly wider tires, around 11.4x32.8, which is a typical 285 size for the H3 rim. Like, if I want to run the H3 rim, I have to give up some height or else rub the sway because I'm too wide. So, I have to think longer term maybe, since the H3 rim will take a lot of tires that are bigger later, if I do more lifting. The 7" width of the stocker should limit one to an 11" wide tire, although I know a lot of guys are running 11.5's. I'm sticking to the tire makers rim recommendations.

i run 265/75/16 Firestone Destination ATs on H3 wheels on a cranked/shackle lifted 06 Z71 and the tires rub the sway bar (most people do). i had to take the splash guards off to clear. the H3 wheels are 7.5" wide, where the stock Z71 wheels are 7 inches. Approximately 0.3 inches are to the inside while only 0.2" are to the outside. My H3 wheels look "sucked-in" compared to the stockers. See if FMRJPR can give you any help, he ran 285s on H3s, but he has a body lift.

#29 ·
Thanks, "FMRJPR sounds familiar," I think he's helped me out with some info but will check that out. Your info is golden real world data. I'm afraid I've been spreading false info based on the offset calculator. Or maybe I used it incorrectly. I've looked at your album and you oughtta know, so now, finally, I got it. Somehow, after using the calculator, I was under the wishful idea that >by far< most of the extra 1/2 inch of the H3 rim went to the outside. Not sure if you have the AT with Uni T, but I'm guessing that the width of your tire is about the same as the stock General, but it is a little over an inch taller with better offroad handling. It was hard to see the "sucked in" aspect in your pix because in some the rear suspension was nicely articulated outward. The H3 rims have upside if more lifting is planned, since they can mount a 285, but I'm starting to think I'm going to keep my stockers on for now, until I'm ready to do a body lift as well as the keys/shackles. Gonna check with Bahamatodd to see if I can copy his deal for now. THANK YOU!

Looked it up, even though I'm suddenly in French Polynesia. Satellites are amazin things. BFG Km2 LT255/85/R16=33.3"x10." Wow, that's an eye opener! My mind keeps getting blown by possibilities and facts I had not considered. I can't consider one that tall (you got the 3" PAC, I don't) but I could consider trying to find a 10" to run on my H3's. Also, BFG claims you can drive to the trail on those Km2's. They look pretty aggro for that to me, but I have no experience with them. Have you ridden on road on those at all? Was considering the AT KO very seriously, like Bahamatodd has on.
